Then again, screenwriting (at least according to the Hollywood best practices) is extremely formulaic and can still yield products that I would consider real art. For no small part, it's because the Syd Field-esque three-act paradigm is so informed by the hero's journey.

i'm surprised at this positive appraisal. i assumed based on like 1 screenshot that this was just another one of those washed out color pallete, punisher bumper sticker on pickup truck, right wing / military industrial complex adjacent GUY MOVIES americans in every single surburb subsist on, dressed up in a game of thrones fur costume instead of the usual camo -- but if that's not what it is nvm.
it is a guys movie but its a luka style of guys movie

I was a bit surprised given the climate that it was greenlit because its probably going to considered by most a movie for the coastal elite but it also really was a white supremacist uber mensch fantasy.

But within its own cultural context, white doesn't really mean anything. The slaves and the masters were all white.

But true about the larger liberal context, within which anything this will-to-power-esque can't help but be read as cryptofascist, a reading which certainly isn't without historical justification.

Very true, its pretty tongue-in-cheek at some points, with the extended scenes of men howling and whatnot.
those were my favorite parts. extended shots of men screaming at nothing in particular until theyre red in the face. Ive never seen a movie that made me want to work out before but this one did it. I want to unlock the power of the psychopath

I guess it implies white supremacism when it is represented in a more multi-cultural context.
and that it forgoes realism to make the vikings look like superheroes and treats their cosmology as a real and existing thing. Obv its not white supremacist literally but its a movie white supremacists of the weird internet variety would probably love.

Totally agree.

I liked this movie at the time, can't remember much about it now though apart from there being some brutal violence and it ending in quite an ambiguous, audience-frustrating way

version says he hates this film, what does that say about him

I must say this does look a bit dull. (From the clips.)

It has that washed out look of A24 films – reminds me particularly of The Green Knight. Although that film had some pretty great bits in it.

re: cinema dying, I feel like that process is being accelerated above all by streaming – but streaming now looks like it might be in trouble, what with the decline of Netflix.

Will be interesting to see if streaming starts declining and cinemas start "coming back".

It all depends on economics I suppose

Anyone will have noticed how long films are nowadays, which again I take to be a streaming thing. Long, ponderous movies that you can pause halfway to have a dump and (subsequently) get snacks from the kitchen.
