Ever taken heroin? Ever sat in an inflatable tyre inner tube and floated along a calm river/sea off your tits on oxy listening to Lull? Ever had an operation and been given the red button of special intravenous morphine control, sunk into in a golden labyrinth of deep, deep warmth? This thread’s for you or, more relevant to the actual subject, is there music that *mimics opioid drug states (*without glorifying their consumption)? At times it seems there might be, or always has been
When I was a few years into using aeons ago, one mode of listening became absolutely clear - glory of effect in enveloping you completely in the tone and texture of sound - prising an extra 10-15% of immersion after a few bumps/licks of brown. A steep descent, vertiginous, a wall of scarlet red fire and into possibly my favourite ever Mick Harris work, Lull’s “Slow Fall Inward”
To drift. To drift for days, corralled off from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Hints of Hawkwind in the intro, a track which epitomises the Russian craft of turning image into sound via the ANS synth. Forget the Coil forays. The nearest thing to becoming a human kite, no pun intended. Rewind, blend, soar on the crest as your heart rate drops to 50 after bump no2 jfc might have hit that too hard I’m melting
