Music for Opiates

Ever taken heroin? Ever sat in an inflatable tyre inner tube and floated along a calm river/sea off your tits on oxy listening to Lull? Ever had an operation and been given the red button of special intravenous morphine control, sunk into in a golden labyrinth of deep, deep warmth? This thread’s for you or, more relevant to the actual subject, is there music that *mimics opioid drug states (*without glorifying their consumption)? At times it seems there might be, or always has been

When I was a few years into using aeons ago, one mode of listening became absolutely clear - glory of effect in enveloping you completely in the tone and texture of sound - prising an extra 10-15% of immersion after a few bumps/licks of brown. A steep descent, vertiginous, a wall of scarlet red fire and into possibly my favourite ever Mick Harris work, Lull’s “Slow Fall Inward”

To drift. To drift for days, corralled off from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Hints of Hawkwind in the intro, a track which epitomises the Russian craft of turning image into sound via the ANS synth. Forget the Coil forays. The nearest thing to becoming a human kite, no pun intended. Rewind, blend, soar on the crest as your heart rate drops to 50 after bump no2 jfc might have hit that too hard I’m melting

After discovering Sacrament by Oleg Buloshkin through an old junky, same bloke flat lined one night away from his Fagin swarm. His kids were kind enough to give me this record - it accompanied many a nod and has a delicacy of swing that occludes its stranger moments. Any day can be improved by its prescient presence (old fella o’ded on a full moon), morphine 30mgs timed release frequently comes in purple dissolvable layering so purple tongues accompanied letting the seal melt in your mouth before necking

lots of the Chain Reaction/deepchord/echopsace label releases were known as heroin house, dubby floating 4/4 pulses.

My only experience with opiates is being prescribed codeine after an eye operation and being too preoccupied with the constantly watering eyes and nose, nausea and loss of vision to have an opinion on the drug.

This is a 2010s thing in that vein I always come back to, might be a bit up tempo for this thread though.

lifting from film audio, Europa’s prologue

Mirror. So shimmery with a sheen of harmonic depth

Beats as nod is maybe Trent and Chez Damier of all people

Their acknowledged classic, but for me Pentastar is their sleazy smack-rock pinnacle:

That's my favourite of theirs. Remember being taken aback at just hearing riffs the first time I heard it after expecting more of the same, the string piece and Coda Maestoso too.

This one's good off one of the other releases,

supposedly, Dylan Carlson of Earth was Kurt Cobain's best friend and sold Kurt his last bag of smack before, well, you know. not sure if that latter part is true.

see i heard it different that he bought him the shotgun that he later "allegedly" used

i only say allegedly cause it wouldn't surprise me if some people on here believe Courtney Love really did put out a hit on him

Yeah, I heard it was the shotgun too. There's that Nick Broomfield film where he interviews him.

part of the fentanyl general/anaesthesia woohoo is where you come round immediately from surgery, in theatre, and for a second the pain doesn’t register. I couldn’t have been more relaxed. White lights above, time/temporality no longer linear in any sense, then an explosion of embodied pain, immediately in the present

avoiding a crack house in another decade, finding somewhere to bump a containment dose of an increasingly empty baggy, gotta score rapid

walking under orange orbed streetlights, sweating and cautious of being robbed so tools at the ready and go in as a small group, sample, pin out, leave in corridors of strip lighting annihilated

come round on the sofa at a mate’s, strangers opposite, buy more heroin and bump a bigger tester, melt into

ah, my bad, got that mixed up. Dylan was definitely a smackhead for years, though.

I had surgery several years ago and was put on some kind of opiate while recovering in hospital. Travis Scott sounded great in that woozy state, but then again most things would probably.
