Sunglasses

It feels as though summer (or if not actual summer something that will do quite nicely until summer comes along) has suddenly arrived in Portugal. A week ago there were moments during the night and early morning that were actually cold and for which one would require a coat if outside - but this week it's all changed and cold feels like a distant memory. T-shirts all the way to October I'm hoping... but, my pasty white English eyes can no longer venture outside without protection. Locals don't seem to need it in the same way but as soon as it's this bright my eyes if naked will be perma-squinting and I have this weird thing (or maybe it's not weird, does everyone get this?) where if it's too bright I have to screw up my face and then I start sneezing quite violently. I don't want to say that I am allergic to the sun or bright light or something cos that would a) be a huge exaggeration and b) make me sound like a vampire, but the point is, I simply have to wear sunglasses. And I am always buying and always breaking or losing pairs of sunglasses. So, if I have to wear them then I might as well make 'em good. Tell me what are the best looking sunglasses that I should get (ideally not expensive cos they never last more than a month or two - but whatever, if you have some you really like that cost a thousand pounds just tell us so I can look at them and wonder how that can be possible).

So, yeah, recommend me loads of good sunglasses please.

used to wear various thick black plastic frame ones but for the past 10+ years have settled into the classic aviator.

also, mine are prescription sunglasses, so I keep close tabs on them because they're a lot more expensive than department store ones.

OK, that's the classic suggestion of course.

I would like to see some out of the ordinary ones though, and ideally pictures of you lot looking really super cool in your best sunglasses... but I guess that's a bit of a long-shot.

I saw these for sale and had this idea of making my own pair of sunglasses out of some cannibalised parts from cameras etc. I got a few parts for it anyway, mine will obviously be a bit more rough and ready if I ever get round to doing it at all.

Ive never found a pair that works for me. think they look stupid and arbitrary on my face for the most part. looking at google images now though Id say they look that way on most people .

Well I get that sunglasses may not be the passport to looking good that everyone thinks... but in this kind of light I really do need them.

I'm in portland, there was a guy on the monorail thing at 1am yesterday wearing some great sunglasses. They were kind of square, they really suited him. I mostly noticed him though coz him and two of his friends surrounded this girl that was sitting by herself, tried to sell her some perfume, one brushed thier (own) hair with a hairbrush, another was carrying a new pair of brown brogues, and then they started smoking crack. Glass pipe is probably crack right? Anyway get those

That is the look I'm going for. Shame you didn't get me a picture (or did you?) - but I suppose that they might have killed you.

I had a pair I quite liked, left them somewhere, got in contact with them and picked em up from lost property... and then totally lost them next day. Until ten minutes ago when I found them on the bathroom floor under a cabinet. Sweet. Losing them was kinda what made me do a thread.

do you even feel guilty about your carbon footprint, Shaka? I thought you just said you were in Arizona or something, now it's Portland. and this is after galavanting all over the Middle East.

Did you intervene in the harassment of this girl at all?
we were on the tram thing for about half an hour and i was trying to figure out what to do. they were sharing whatever they were smoking with her - although surely she wasn't smoking crack? it must have been weed or something, but then, why smoke weed out a crack pipe - and she was going for it, and chatting to them too, going along with it. i wasn't close enough to hear what they were saying or really to figure out how comfortable she was. but its a dodgy situation even if they seem to be having a nice time i guess. i'd heard her talking to her dad on the phone about how she had to go all the way to the end of the tram line and then get a taxi to get to her hotel, and it was 1am and pissing it down. i wasn't exactly sure what i could do though. in the end it resolved itself, they got off the tram at one of the stops. but i'm glad that it ended like that, it looked like the kind of thing that was a bit risky and that you shouldn't just leave, but i wasn't sure what i could do. worst case three against one would end pretty badly for me, even though obviously as you all know from my interest in posting on a music forum i'm hard as nails. before those guys got off i was thinking that calling the police might be a good idea.

its a good question, the short answer is yes i feel guilty about it but i do it anyway. for work stuff i don't feel guilty coz i think the kind of work i'm a part of is properly important. these domestic jaunts though aren't really justifiable. only problem in the US is that there's generally no other way to get around. in 2019 i tried to do everything without unnecessary flights but its a billion times more expensive and takes forever, and in a lot of cases is simply impossible. nyc to new orleans took 28 hours on the train and cost like $400 one way in the sleeper cabin thing. chicago was about the same. of course i could just not do this stuff, which is probably the right thing to do. arizona was to change planes so not a separate trip. but still. all things considered its hard to justify a lot of this kind of travel, but it's easy not to think about it, and mobility (for good and for bad, there are some serious personal downsides) is a pretty core component of how my life is set up.

Very difficult situation. I would have almost certainly worried quite a lot and done dick.

The best shades I ever had were a pair of snide Police sunglasses I got in Chatuchak Market in Bangkok for £1.35. Was gutted when one of the lenses fell out a few years later. Every other pair I’ve tried made me look like I’m in a Donal MacIntyre sting.

I hear that crap sunglasses can open the iris while failing to block uv rays

I've heard this as well.

yeah, aside from going between Boston-NY-Washington DC, trains are a terribly expensive and slow option here.
