found footage from the Backrooms

for years a single pixelated photo and a vague description were all the evidence we had of this place. but now, thanks to a massive surge in interest, we have countless hours of footage, and some idea (if not exactly a map) of the iterations/levels and deities of this moldy, humming purgatory.

sometimes other memes come to life within these corridors... to name just a few, quandale dingle, 2012 gangnum style dancing, and shrek (they all seem to be malevolent, but he's the worst of them all imo. the mrs. massey of the backrooms)

Yes, I'm the same. It reminds me of the run off etch in the groove on croww's debut record

From discogs:

"Matrix / Runout (Side A): CROWW - PROSTHETICS "THERE WAS A PEACH COLOURED COUCH AND THAT LAY A WOMAN IN A PEACOCK HEADDRESS" RAVE 019 ≠ D&M"

Which if you Google leads to this

entity encounters

That first one is pretty cool. Ever play Amnesia: the Dark Descent?
Or SOMA, from the same developers? The general vibe reminds me strongly of that. Plus the whole Slenderman phenomenon, of course.

Would you be so kind as to imagibe for a second that I'm really stupid and ignorant (difficult I know) and start this explanation at a much lower level - and then go forward quite a lot more slowly?

mvuent's discussed this thing before about what are known as liminal spaces - think empty lobbies, subway tunnels, places which have an uncanny quality to them and exist between other spaces - and these clips are of things occupying them.

I might be way off, but I'm assuming 'The Backrooms' is a general term for the equivalent of when you fall through a wall in a game like Grand Theft Auto and realise there's a big grey space hidden behind the game, like the corridor full of doorways in The Matrix Reloaded or what Luke says about psychedelics taking you into an actual place where there are other entities on the line.

We talked about it a bit here -

Ah ok, thank you, it was how computer games fitted into it that I was missing.

I read an article about someone kinda pushing through a wall or something in Red Dead Redemption and finding themselves in a huge sort of behind the scenes emptiness which they filmed themselves wandering and floating around in for days. I suppose that that is related right?

Yeah, I posted that here.

Are the above all from one particular game then? And if so which game?

Nah, I don't think so.

It's kind of ruining it a bit by explaining it, but I think the idea's that these places and creatures actually exist in a sort of Lovecraftian way.

The clips are supposed to be found footage of people exploring the places and coming into contact with them the way someone might film themselves checking out abandoned buildings.

Yes sorry, I'm demanding you dissect it for me when you've given me enough to go in on my own.

There's a specifically online aspect to it too, like mvuent says; memes taking on a life of their own and ending up in the Backrooms.

Remember the stuff about dead people ending up in DeepArcher in Bleeding Edge?

Oh vaguely. I think you got a lot more from that book than I did... I guess the ideas were there but that's all. I don't demand a narrative but I think I need more than just some ideas. That novel might have been better suited to another medium or format, rather than being created as a novel. Something like "the list fornat" maybe.

Yeah, it originated in a 4chan post that describes the Backrooms as the region you fall into if you 'noclip out of reality':

Photo_Backrooms.jpg

Clipping, in video game terms, is the process by which the graphics engine decides which objects can be seen by the player and which cannot. In some 3D games, 'noclip' is a cheat code that allows the player to pass through the walls of the map and sort of walk or glide around in the non-space outside:

It can also happen accidentally, as the result of a coding error.
