Alienated Man too clever for Modern Life

I still think of "post office" when I see a mail carrier. the mind-numbing repetition, regardless of how much you deliver today there's another thousand letters piling in tomorrow. occasionally chuck a bag of undelivered mail into an empty field, what does it matter? just trying to keep your head above water.
thats what cutting your toenails is like. thats life. the best you can do is keep your head above water.

It's definitely a thing with the French in particular. You get it in the theory stuff like D&G and Bataille and you've got de Sade and a bunch of other filthy novelists like that Guyotat guy Craner likes and Robbe-Grillet; some of the notorious English stuff was published in France first too: Naked Lunch, Ulysses, Miller's Tropics.

There's also the 'New French Extremity' stuff that came out of France in the 2000s, films like Martyrs.
I gave up on the last Robbe-Grillet... it's only about 100 pages but how many pages of pre-teenage girls being sexually tortured to death do you need?

the thing with all these books is that deep down said alienated men are deeply sentimental and use their confrontational attitudes and acerbic tongue as a way to protect themselves from being hurt once more

i read through a decent chunk of Journey to the end of the night and for all his talk of the meaninglessness and madness of the world, the part that reminds you that he was a middle class Frenchmen and brings the book back down to earth is when he's in Africa and he paints all this grotesque images of the people living there and the one guy he finds admirable is the Brazilian guy who hates everyone and chooses to isolate himself from everybody
