definitely prefer this low key way of doing pop ballads (i guess they count as ballads, i mean 'slow emotional songs' essentially) to their equivalent in the 90s / 00s
It's interesting I mean, her vocal is so much more fragile, intimate than the 90s stuff—and I think this is true of a lot of contemporary music. Condenser mics and half-whispered words.

EDIT: Even compared, I think, to the Mazzy/Cranberries stuff. Which totally has the softness, the whisper, but doesn't sound like "THIS WAS RECORDED ON AN EXPENSIVE CONDENSER MIC"

The fragile voice thing is kryptonite level repellent for some ears, JoAnna oh fuck off keyboard N is a far worse offender trying to make you wonder which note she’s going to hit next too

see @mvuent post about development of timbre

it's so weird to hear rock derived people talk about music as if they're engaging in a dub methodology, with absolutely no formative influence of dub.

Not saying that's a good or bad thing, just strange.

has anyone here actually heard a whole BE album though?

o.rodrigo does the slightly 'fragile vocal' thing too. also why i hate frank ocean. and sampha actually. its one of the worst things about modern pop music singing.

it is true that if you click on it while logged in on spotify or youtube and you registered your DOB on your account then child protection services will immediately put you on the register if youre over 19.

i assume its not totally unrelated to computer mics and how people sound when they talk into a computer. laptops and phones are an intimate device, the most intimate perhaps

isn't intimacy the most repulsive desire in pop music though. surely the point of the best pop music is to trick you into thinking that you can achieve the unattainable, not to come down to your level. There's no fantasy in Eilish.
