I went to Lourdes when I was maybe ten or eleven and was astonished by the sheer volume of crappy stalls and gift shops selling plastic Jesus figurines, ceramic Marys etc. Sometimes I think I imagined it, but apparently that is exactly what it's like.

I can't find the pics online, but during Semana Santa in Spain, the altar boys get these amazing gold-trim black jackets that make them look like a cross between 18th century generals and bullfighters. I'd have served Mass every day if I'd been issued that, instead of a hideous smock. Striding boldly down the aisle, giving the parishioners a haughty sneer.

That's where I live.

There's a tiny little bar near the the alfalfa in Sevilla that had to be seen to be believed for the amount of Catholic bling it has crammed into one small space, I'll try and find out what it's called and post some pictures

I've been to Rome and Florence, and I tend to find Catholic churches awe-inspiring for the first few minutes, and then quickly a little nauseating.

St. Peter's in particular is both incredibly impressive and staggeringly dull.

(There are obvious exceptions to this e.g. the Sistine Chapel, which is obviously 'a bit much' for English taste but also painted by a genius.)

Yes, it's very tacky and gaudy, Catholic taste. But as I say, the Irish have no connection with it. It's shiny puffa jackets, big sunglasses, slicked back hair, those patent leather high top trainers with the studs all over them, distressed denim, over styled facial hair
