algorithmic indie

Very different kind of indie actually, you don't see any trumpets or accordions or string orchestration on your playlist—it's all Wet Leg & Vaccines & alt-J, a combo of guitar rock and electropop.

Whereas there's very very little of that in my vision of oughts indie. It's a lot more piano and string centric.

can see why Finney loves this stuff. It's not quite the existential despair of second year. The first time being let loose from the parents home, not yet reached that plateau where drinking 20 martinis gives you a crushing hangover the next day.

In a nonsense country like Australia this makes sense. After all they are deformed cockneys lacking swagger.

There should probably be different words to describe Fanfarlo/Beirut/Andrew Bird/Grizzly Bear vs say Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Strokes/King Tuffy

It's not my playlist. Do you think I have any indie playlists? I'm obeying the algorithm you weirdo!

I'm being a pure democrat for once, listening to the indie that the greatest amount of people listen to on spotify. It's curated by them, after all.

It was a product of feeling too much and all at once, of wanting these kind of beautiful transcendent tear-jerker moments, using music as a channel for that release

Something like this vid is just so central to my experience of/interest in these bands

Megaphone, raw strained vocals, ecstatic U2-style harmonies

It's amazing to me that "indie" is still alive as a concept it must be what it's like for folks who were around for 80s/90s indie

ah now we're at the libertines.

This is like 77 punks who thought the specials were the pinnacle of music and now say Tommy Robinson's got some good things to say.

So why not Serbian turbofolk then, eh Jake?

friday nights with 60 chesterfields, burning through them at a rate of knots.

Exaltant battle of troy coruses on loop. 10 million years after the fact. The warriors of Sparta. Funnily enough absolutely no greek motifs for Corpse.

Third I want to read you reviewing Kyoto by Phoebe Bridgers

Pls pls pls

her voice sounds like imogen heap on nitrous. Personally, if I was writing a song about my parents divorce, I would not like to sound like I had no care in the world on da hippy crack, mane.

A bizarre kind of orientalism where Kyoto is analogised to be like Seattle.

The horns and harp are ok but the songs theme is not nearly clan-like enough. Too much inner turmoil, not enough irrational tribalisms. When using horns and harps one should not be rationalistic.

It's quite a narcotic voice. Allmost demands you to ignore the lyrics which invite nothing but self-pity. I can rate that.

Can't ever imagine being dilligent about acquiring the song for offline listening. Probably needed to be more kitschy. that beginning where she says day off in kyoto is the best bit cos its so moronic and that's what she should have based the rest of the song on. Cos it is moronic music and one should lean fully into it. It's like someone discovering I am t-paine app in 2009. Why then an immediate reversion to a song?

One of your dance music mates in america should just loop that day off in kyoto bit over a house beat with some horns. It would be a smasher.

Funny that's what I like about it. It's the musical equivalent of the sunglasses emoji, but there are tears staining the mascara behind the smile

It's like this girl I knew from middlesborough who took gak with her mum. I mean, that's just way too bohemian.

Of course I'm going to beat the living daylights out of my kid if I catch him smoking marijuana. Not because I'm against it, I'd be a hypocrite otherwise, but because he should learn not to become a drug casualty.
