The Gentrification of Culture

if it's any consolation, Jamie XX was the worst "name" DJ I've ever seen

edit: I feel I have to explain myself, I was only at that event because MF DOOM ( all caps ) was on the bill

another edit: it was Warehouse Project, Manchester - maybe the worst night I've ever been to, and I've been to some shite nights

i'm not totally against jamie xx btw it was just 'triggering' to see his new tune is called 'kill dem' after already being preoccupied with posh culture

we all remember this boomkat review

"Jamie xx practises safe raving with his debut solo album proper, following a 2011 collaboration with Gil Scott-Heron and production as part of The xx. 'In Colour' posits Jamie as the pre-eminent posh soul boy, lifting and massaging inspiration from the rich heritage of late '80s + early '90s London dance culture and channelling it into a pop-ready format palatable to Radio 1 daytime tastes and festival soundtracks. The putative "soul" of rare groove, boogie, hardcore and early jungle is sucked out and spliced with vocals in feathered arrangements ripened up for students and yummy mummys alike - all under one roof. From the deflated hardcore of 'Gosh' to the trudging 'Girl', it's as seductive as a Waitrose fridge on a warm day, infused with exotic tropical reference points in the steel drums of 'Obvs', mixing the suburban Breaks of latter-day Chicane and Marine Parade with woolly chords right out of a Lamb classic in 'Hold Tight', or nodding to seminal Joss Stone in 'Loud Places'. Oh, it's going to be a great summer, we can just feel it."

"I haven't heard the album and am quite open to the prospect of disliking it, but I think that review is some bullshit whining about diluted white middle-class culture from people with delusions as to their own raw to the core hardness - sub-blackdown at best.

I just did a quick bit of research and he went to the same performing arts school in Putney as Burial did

hmm.. will have to temper my class war tendencies

edit: Jamie XX's real surname is "Smith", about as low class as you can get

further edit: admit to be disappointed I can't hate him on class war grounds, but still, responsible for some appalling music

I used to shop at boomkat when it was a physical stall ( "pelican neck" ) and can affirm they weren't middle class white guys

his music does sound posh. it fits in that massive attack niche. they were mostly posh weren't they. xx's schoolmate four tet's music sounds a bit posh as well for that matter. burial is arguable, because i loved his music so much and my vision is cloudy, but he probably overall does have a .......actually writing this probably the most interesting thing is that the three of them (xx four tet burial) all went to the same school and presumably all grew up in putney and all put out music that audience-wise and to some extent sonically is pretty similar. i don't know anything about any of those lads' lives.
