the house Renaissance

I remember when indie heads got into her work song cos they saw it as a critique of capitalist productivity. Which speaks to indie's bankrupcy more than it does Rihanna or Work in particular.

A culture which defines itself as oppositional pop, no longer being able to ignore the overwhelming pop hegemony.

But I do suspect that its a shoe-in for album of the year at a lot of outlets not because of its musical quality (which ofc is all a matter of subjective opinion) but because of its importance, real or notional, in terms of throwing a spotlight on black/queer culture in the mainstream. I mean it ticks all the boxes for music journalism anxious to be perceived as woke/LGBT+ positive. And the narrative of house music being recaptured by black/queer culture (again, bogus or not) is one that would appeal to critics too.
part of the fabric of life at the moment isn't it. you see it in wire a bit too, the championing / coverage of things because people think its morally right to do so, rather than because they're getting anything in particular out of the music.

even worse when sometimes you eventually hear the music and it’s underwhelming. The first time I heard a deconstructed house track, I thought it was interesting. The 10th time I read a hype review, not so much, not all tracks by queer or trans producers are great.

rihanna has obviously been on some terrible stuff, real dregs, the pits. and she has all the offputting trappings of a pop megastar. but as a singer she does this vulnerability / power thing which is absolutely killer.
