I thought I was a fan of ECM but - having just done a deep dive - I realised there's really only a few things I flat-out adore.... some other stuff I like.... and a vastly larger expanse of leaves-me-cold.

The adores to follow shortly

But anyone here a fan of Manfred Eicher Sound? Got any tips?

One figure in particular I can never get into is Keith Jarrett, so for an amuse bouche, here's something I came across at one of those websites that purport to know the personal wealth of stars and performers. This really tickled me, the unabashed made-upness of it:

"The American pianist has an estimated net worth of $245 million. He owes his fortune to smart stock investments, substantial property holdings, lucrative endorsement deals with CoverGirl cosmetics. He also owns several restaurants (the “Fat Jarrett Burger” chain) in Washington, a Football Team (the “Allentown Angels”), has launched his own brand of Vodka (Pure Wonderjarrett - US), and is tackling the juniors market with a top-selling perfume (With Love from Keith) and a fashion line called “Keith Jarrett Seduction”.

I discovered the flaw in my plan which is that ECM on Youtube is Premium Members only. So then I thought I would create a video of my absolute favorite tune and list it as Private. On Youtube it says 'blocked'. However the link is in fact displaying on my screen through Dissensus - I don't know if any one else can see-hear it?

It's "Kite Dance" off Jan Garbarek's Paths, Prints. Which I love as much for what Bill Frisell is doing as Garbarek.

Whole album is wonderful.

However I should say this is the first ECM record I ever heard, so perhaps there's a particular initiatory bond there.

People love to hate ECM but there are some serious gems hidden in that catalog

Incredibly slow net on phone rn so not going to link it but Robin Kenyatta - Girl from Martinique is a personal fave

A mate once asked 'what the hell did she do to him?'

That is NOT the name of his football team.

I don't much of the typical ECM sound, but I do like the s/t Terje Rypdal album from 1971, and christian wallumred ensemble "the zoo is far".

this is edited, the album version is 12 minutes

@blissblogger the YouTube in post #3 doesn't work for me. You can check that sort of thing by opening the page in incognito mode btw. That way you don't need to log out of yt.

Also, I couldn't find a decent link but Afric Pepperbird is another Garbarek that's worth a gander if you haven't already

Will have a squiz of the essay, but that stance kinda feels like Ricky Gervais boldly outing himself as atheist

Chtonic Fatigue Syndrome
The essay is from the perspective of someone who has loved a lot of ECM, and finds (at least some of it) aesthetically beguiling but ethically and politically disgusting.

Call Me When You Get There is an album by bassist Barre Phillips recorded in 1983 and released on the ECM label. but its not on tubes

I think ECM was really important for me in opening up a lot of new music for me - especially stuff a long way off from my rock/indie world. As mentioned above the Meredith Monk stuff, Argo Pärt, John Cage, Kim Kashkashian, Trgyve Siem (sp I think) plus lots of jazz stuff like Charles Lloyd, Charlie Haden plenty others like Kenny Wheeler and of course Jarrett. Now I probably look at the smooth packaging with an inward shudder that I could’ve been seduced by it all but we are all older and wiser now…
