Chicago House

Chicago House is of course already well documented and discussed, and even though I'm a self-confessed Detroit addict, often preferring the cold edge element to that city, I was into Chicago before I was into Detroit. I learned Acid House came from Chicago records, you see, and had a few WBMX tapes and that was enough for me, to get started at least, it's something I've returned to all the time.

It seems WBMX played loads of different stuff. Imports, Hi NRG and more. But it's 80s house music and proto house music I want to concentrate on in this thread.

So I made a top 10 which I'll post below. Hopefully not all the most obvious choices, but please fill in the gaps with more.

1) Alias - Civil Defense (Dub)

2) Jamie Principle - Bad Boy

3) Solo - Girls, Girls (Ah-Ha-Hi)

4) Tyree Ft Chic - I Fear The Night

5) ESP - It's You

6) Raze - Jack The Groove

7) Chip E - If You Only Knew

8) Virgo Four - In a Vision

9) Master C&J - When You Hold Me

10) Jaquarius - Love is Happiness (Acid Rain)

Good thread. I recently loaded my phone with a bunch of mixes from Ron Hardy and Farley Jackmaster Funk. Most of the Farley ones are from WBMX and they're almost all brilliant. Just raw, jacking energy with some serious sleaze and unexpected twists and turns. I keep picturing Chicago city skyline at night cruising along in the car with this stuff pounding out of the speakers and it makes me want a time machine so bad.

One of my all time favorite producers is Marcus Mixx. He goes so deep and twisted at the same time. Can only imagine what it would be like hearing something like The Spell for the first time.

Will post some choons tomorrow.

Master C&J are hard to beat.

No idea why this says Larry Heard, not sure who it is. The file I have on my comp is labelled jackmaster hater - acid dreams (ron hardy edit) (mix 1) and I think it was from a compiled release from Kevin Starke

Chip E. Such a beast

Not enough is said about Gene Hunt. As both dj and producer he was one of the best

T for tremendous. Bit meatier with punch and a rough polish. Melodic, heavy bottom ends, savage

Joe Lewis has stacks of records but this is the one I keep heading backwards into the future with while facing the past

Good stuff. I'll listen to these in full when I get back from the park this evening. Amazes me how much I ain't heard yet, makes me less confident about my own 10 choices.

Cheating here. Because it has Chicago in the lyrics relating to a night drive through the city. Bit Hacienda meets hauntology but it’s aged very very well

No11 to buck the trend has to be China. Only ever had it on tape for years until a mate chanced on a copy and I renewed tapes of random 12”s (all lost to time)

A track not dissimilar to a segue to everything that followed - Terry Hunter/UBQ Project, GU, Boo Williams, etc etc. Infamous for managing a stripped back sound with hypnotic compression you simply couldn’t ignore
