all i can express is shame

i only posted on reddit about three times, and once it was a great joke that got 1,500 upvotes

it's a good window into america i think, coz that's mostly who posts on there

and a good window into a kind of normie psycho-dom. the financial boards are quite eye-opening sometimes.

there is also a tendency for people to discuss and take quite strong positions on things that they would be embarrassed to talk about in real life. it genuinely can be quite consciousness-altering in that respect. whole discourses and dialogues.

the travel boards are really sad. even the budget travel boards. thousands of people missing the point, and encouraging others to do the same. i think i've said it before, i think the old backpacker-land is over, gone, dead. like any scene will experience at some point.

also fascinating that there is nothing like an equivalent in french. i looked quite hard once. the francophone world hasn't produced message boards in anything like the same way and the anglophone world.
Theres alot of interesting things about reddit I agree. Its a normie space but its occupied by normies who might also be aware of the term and think that they arent.

i'd also classify reddit as quite an influential thing, particularly for younger middle classish people in UK and US. actually the one time i've heard people talk about reddit in real life was people talking about a skincare sub. that is a real rabbit hole that probably does affect what people look like in these places, at a minimum, some cultural practices, part of that meta-trend towards men and women really caring a lot about what they look like

@Woebot did you ever come across or learn about the 60s' relationship to the "zombie" concept? It feels like modern NPC discourse has echoes of historic "sheep" and "zombie" accusations but I'm having a bit of trouble turning things up with online searches.

The film Only Lovers Left Alive uses zombies as a metaphor for npc-like people

cultural mafia crossover from an "expose" of Dimes Square:

A couple weeks ago, a friend—someone I’d met online first, IRL second—posted something (lowercase Futura letters over a bright pink smear) that read, “i don’t dislike red scare because of their views i dislike it because they spawned a new, more annoying type of normie.”

The thing that creeps me out the most about a forum like reddit is the extreme obsession with the social ethics of everyday situations, sibling conflicts, relationship issues, random confrontations and so on. They go nuts for being allowed to deliberate on stuff like who is the good guy who is the bad guy.

AITA is a prime example - judgemental in the extreme

It spills over into how you approach literature and film, too. Everything is viewed in terms of how to judge the characters actions. Depressing stuff.

the only AITA post I can remember that wasn't by an asshole, was by someone who had been invited to a Game of Thrones themed wedding

My friend “Lexa” is getting married soon. She and her husband are extreme game of thrones fans (they’ve watched the show 5+ times, their house is decked out with game of thrones themed decorations/accessories, etc). Because of their shared love of Game of Thrones, Lexa and her fiancé decided to have a game of thrones-themed wedding.

I am perfectly fine with the idea of a themed wedding. I am even ok with the game of thrones dress/costume for the wedding. The only thing I can’t seem to get behind is the fact that the majority of the wedding will be conducted in High Valyrian (for those who don’t know, it’s a made up language from game of thrones).

Her wedding is also a destination wedding, and I’m finding it hard to justify going out of my way to go to a wedding that’s not even in a real language that I wont be able to understand. Aita if I don’t go?

I mentioned that I was having doubts to Lexa, and she got really mad at me because I had originally had said I could go before I knew it was in High Valyrian. She’s also been sending my links to learn High Valyrian on Duolingo and I feel like even if I did show up, she’d be mad at me for not learning it.

Edited to add: The reception will also be in High Valyrian and all speeches and toasts are expected to be in High Valyrian too

i saw a painting recently with the caption 'all types of people are judges, the only important thing is that they're fair and honest'

reading online judgement, i think i've said something like this before on here, is usually a load of disembodied voices talking about events they didn't see, participate in or experience. people jump off from the few words that have been provided. it's also quite a dominant feature of the internet.

part of the consequence i think is that among people who read the internet a lot, which is probably a majority of people by now based on what i see, a new morality is being constructed based on this mode of thinking and reacting. often a very forthright and indeed judgmental one.

in my exoereince its the opposite, its usually some sap whose clearly not the asshole looking for cheap validation- 'my girlfriend spits on me and calls me mean things in front of our friends, AITA if I insist on taking the dog collar off when were in public?'

I suppose my experience of AITA is mediated by the twitter account which only posts the most extreme examples of assholes asking "Am I The Asshole", and the answer is, invariably, "yes"

it's not like I waste time on reddit, I've got volumes of J.H. Prynne to digest
