Best Ever Volley Goals

Probably a short-lived thread, but inspired by the amazing goal in Serie A today and then the Van Basten goal it reminded me of (see halfway down this page https://dissensus.com/index.php?threads/6513/page-294#post-674213), I am in the mood for spectacular volleyed goals.

To me this is the gold standard, I give extra points to anyone striking orthogonally to the path of the ball as that means the timing is so much harder. So this one, where the ball is totally at ninety degrees to the swing of his foot and yet he still twats it in from outside the box is hard to beat

Of course you have Bale's one which was in the final of the CL giving it that extra gloss... not as far out though

And I suppose we need to mention Ronaldo v Juve (the second one on about 35 seconds)

As a rule though I'm not so big on bicycle kicks as sideways on scissors kicks and such - not sure why, just an aesthetic thing I guess. But in that vein, I want to mention the much maligned ugly deformed giant Crouch - love the power he got on this one

And this one where the ball doesn't touch the goal between the keeper and the back of the other team's net (feels as though there must be a copyright issue or something in that there are no proper clips of this on youtube)

While we're doing volleyed goals v Man City the Rooney one needs a mention

Anyway, keep 'em coming. I'm actually not always such a fan of the way that goal of the season lists are dominated by goals like the above where someone throws their foot at it and connects once in a blue moon, when really a ten man passing move actually celebrates more of the true beauty AND brains of football... and yet, seeing someone flying through the air and twatting it in with the most satisfying thump like this speaks to something primal and is very very hard to beat.

One of the great world cup volleys...

And speaking of world cup ones... this Platt goal probably still ranks as one of the best moments of my life, just one of those things that never happen, one minute to go and I was thinking "In a fairy tale or even Roy of the Rovers they would somehow score a brilliant goal from this free-kick but even though I'm only about 12 years old I know that life doesn't work like that and it's a certainty that this free-kick will drift aimlessly behind meaning that we head into penalties and thus inevitable depressing defeat.... oh oh oh my god oh fuck yes ohhhhhhh"

And then if we gonna talk England volleys we should mention Gascoigne vs Scotland. I'm gonna break the law and not call him a "mercurial talent" instead I simply link to the goal

This is a good one, Rooney mouthing off at the ref then hoofing it.

This one's good too, although only a half volley.

I remember seeing it live too. Another one - like the Dutch goal - where the sheer brilliance of it was an extra twist of the knife as it was done by the team I wanted to lose.

This was one I did like - from that more innocent time when Mark Hughes was known as The King of the Volley. If I remember rightly this was a very significant goal as, strange as it seems now, Ferguson's role managing Utd was hanging by a thread and they were on the point of elimination by Oldham - the minute reads 28 on the clip but I think that was the 28th minute of extra time and United were going out of the cup until Hughes stuck in this equalizer, Utd won the replay and went on to win the final, and then, in their first season in Europe after the ban was lifted they beat Barcelona in the final to win the Cup Winners Cup. But it was winning the FA Cup that kept Fergie in place and two seasons later they won the league for the first time in decades and... well, the rest is history.

Rivaldo was a great player who has since been overshadowed by several other Brazilian geniuses also beginning with R - he scored a few great volleys in his time. I believe he was very one-footed and often relied on rabonas to avoid using his standing foot - was that him?
Anyway, teaching at ..... Academy I felt very old when monitoring a detention and one of the kids was called Rivvaldo - in my head he'd only just retired.

Wasn't that one part of a hat-trick too?

I think the main thing he's remembered for is that dive at the corner flag when someone booted the ball at him.

Lots of stonkers here but for the purposes of this thread the one vs United at 3.27 stands out as does the one at 5.03

I don't really remember to be honest - but surely he's remembered more for his goals?

Love this jumping volley from Asprilla at about 1.40 here. He was a very exciting player I always thought, do you remember Newcastle beating Barcelona? Think he got three in that game.

Speaking of Columbians, Falcao (not the futsal guy) scored a few ridiculous ones in his time, it's very rare to see one volleyed in like this from a corner, the technique required is crazy

Closer to home, always had a soft spot for Wrighty - the first one here is what I had in mind, although it's not the kind of volley I was really thinking of when I started the thread it's a bouncing ball so fuck it - and check at 0.45 too oh and 2.46... in fact a few more could count too but you can find them youselves.

Edit - I linked the wrong video there, try this one

Seems unfair to leave Hughes with only one - his top five here apparently in low quality sadly... I like the side-footed lob volley on the full vs Liverpool

I'm not bothering with Le Tissier, I guess cos I genuinely reckon that if you created highlight reels of their top twenty or thirty goals for every legendary striker, I think there is a good argument that Le Tissier's would be THE best, and about half of them were volleys.

Going back through those goals above... that Falcao one is a thing of beauty, I watched it ten times in a row, though I suppose it should be said it's quite unusual to be given so much space at a corner like that. Also, that thing with Ian Wright's goals, quite a few in there I'd either forgotten or not seen, I have to admit I wouldn't have known he scored quite so many amazing lobs and power shots from outside the box, there is one chip where the ball is right under his feet and yet he gets it up and down with seemingly impossible ease leaving the keeper more completely stranded than I've ever seen.

The skill set has improved vastly since the 70’s, don’t you think? Fitter. Lighter ball? Better technique? Smaller players? I mean a lot of these goals aren’t all from wee cunts. Wingers, no9’s, frontmen. Batistuta was more of a siege gun boot but for all his shithousing he could play and score too

My mum loves an old World Cup smash sent in the build up to playing you lot in the next one, you can see the ball is heavier from the flight it takes dipping earlier
