Best Ever Volley Goals

All three of those RVPs are an incredible volley but also have at least one or two brilliant passes leading up to them

I always think it's a bit of a shame when an amazing volley happens after a random deflection or failed clearance

Suarez and Van Persie two of the greatest out and out strikers of all time. Maybe the best in my lifetime.

That's why it blew my mind that Haaland has already got more CL goals than Suarez despite him being world class and playing for Liverpool then Barcelona.

Yeah I hear you. And, I know I started this thread so shouldn't complain, but really volleys are normally one split second of magic, whereas a great passing goal can involve a lot more. Such goals seem to be under represented in best of and end of the season lists when to me they do involve more than someone just throwing their foot at something and connecting.

I don't really watch football much so I have no idea really but I always loved watching Suarez at Liverpool and Aguero (and David Silva) at Man City. Think I was even more checked out for the RVP era but I do remember some of those volleys.

Haaland is great to watch in his own way but I can't quite imagine him scoring such spectacular goals as e.g. Suarez. Just scarily good at getting into the right place and efficiently finishing it. (Again, this is based on my occasional tuning into Motd.)

It's that thing, were we talking about this in the other thread?, of sport aspiring to a sort of aesthetic perfection and only occasionally does everything lock into place, at least in a sport as complex and chaotic as football

But the fact it only happens occasionally makes it more special

RVP was a claaaass, rolls royce of player who, while not operating at Bergkamp or Van Basten levels, could strike a ball better than most

Some of the above defy belief

There's something about volleys that are aesthetically satisfying -- beyond the obvious difficulty of pulling them off, there's something about the arc of the ball in mid air (often relatively steep and "slow/lazy") meeting the foot of the player, as if bouncing off it, and flying (usually acceleratedly) into the goal, ideally straight into a corner so we can visually trace a "perfect" line...

Headers can be satisfying too, but not as satisfying, perhaps because a volley is visually clearly "precise", the ball being steered by the toe (e.g.) of a boot that's smaller than it, whereas the head looks a blunt force instrument.

Yeah that seems about right. But he's so good at getting into those positions he ends up being a more effective... arguably better, goal scorer.

I dunno man, I think he was a better finisher than Bergkamp and more skilful than Van Basten.

A forward who could operate as more of a link player with all the vision such a position entails, eg compare to a player with half his talent like Sheringham (ok there might be a Utd bias there too)

I don't really think of either of them having their best years at United... OK Teddy scored in the famous CL triumph, but VP had his best years at Arsenal, I was surprised at how well he did though when he came to United, thought it was the twilight of his career but he could still do it. Sanchez was the opposite of course....

Suarez was patchy in the CL for Barca and barely played in it with Liverpool.
