Music you pretended to like

This is an interesting sort of pretending, perhaps what Sufi meant, the act of pretending to yourself, which can be fraudulent and futile but can also be a way into something, a way of undercutting your own defense mechanisms

Like with that Bronx drill stuff I think there was definitely an element of me trying to imagine what would this sound like if I did like it, if I thought it was the best thing in the world -- and lo! The scales fell from my ears

yeah i think for me it's always been part of the process of getting into new kinds of music, i have to make myself be open to it, come to it on its own terms etc. generally i've found this is a rewarding thing to do. although my ability to do that comes and goes.

with UK drill in particular it was a case of assuming that there must be something there, and ignoring the aspects of it that i found offputting (coz in the end the bits that grate at the start are the bits that end up being the best bits). for some things that works. but in the end UK drill is just a million miles away from anything that resonates with me coz so much of it is about menace and it's a vibe that i've never been able to get into.

sometimes it is futile to try to get into a new sound. but sometimes its massively rewarding, the opening of a portal.

I've never understood the Trout Mask Replica thing. To me, the absurdity or deconstruction or whatever is at the heart of its appeal, is nothing but homely indulgent jest. It's a funny swear word or a that uncle who could burp the alphabet.

Whereas something like this

is much more interesting, a real look into the abyss, a complete breakdown of the self.

generally its necessary to pretend to like things, or at least not slag them off, so that you aren't a complete bellend and actually have some friends.

the thing i've had to pretend to like the most in this respect is probably the wu tang clan, who for whatever reason have this sacrosanct position for a load of people

Yeah, I doubt I'd remember most of the stuff I've pretended to like as it will have been at parties with someone showing me a tune and me having to feign interest and make some half arsed comment just to keep things moving.

It's just cack handed sorry. There was def a bit of look at me I have 70s records of ur favourite muzzikk towards a few indie chicks I was hanging out with at the time. But its just superfluous and unnecessary as a song. instrumental would have been fine. also enough of that Stalinist hatchet man Gramsci.

gang of four were also social democratic chuckleheads, but unlike Scritti they knew how to rock out, so I can forgive their crap politics.

There are things I've liked and bought – and then decided I didn't like and sold – and then, occasionally, decided I did like after all and bought back. But there's nothing I've pretended to like. Who to? And what for? Most people I know think most of what I like is awful anyway.

Which Fall track btw? As for me, counting up now, I have 22 Fall LPs and I like them all. The only Fall I don't like is when Brix was in the band.

Think Luke mentioned some conspiracy blogger who was obsessed with Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins.

It's not all that right wing but it is basically bonkers. He's got an obsession with Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins. Most of his conspiracies theories revolve round her. He thinks she was possessed by some spirt or other. Demented really. There is a really good visual essay on there though about the dome and obelisk conjunction.

I think trout mask replica is fucking wicked
Me too. It came out on CD around '92 and John Peel played a couple of songs from it on each show over a month, so it was like getting all these never-ending random fragments, totally clashing with The Wedding Present or Shellac, or whatever else he was playing. I think that's a good way to hear it, can't imagine sitting down and playing it all in one go.

I love early Scritti records as well. Basically this is just a thread where people say they don't like a load of music that I do like 😐

Scritti are one of those bands I actually do want to like but they're just way too parodic. It's this stumbling bloc I can't get over.

Green Gartside is the squarepusher of post-punk and synth pop don't deny it @blissblogger

Although one could argue that isn't necessarily a bad thing, inherently.

A lot of prog metal like Opeth, Animals as Leaders. I used to hang out with metalheads when I went to uni. It's all so aggressively tonal and precise though, no empty space, no room for ambiguity.
