Incidental Remixes in DJ Sets

djs in the hardcore continuum and adjacent genres tend to fuck with the raw materials a lot. tracks get scratched over, brazenly stacked on top of one other, faded in and out either smoothly or violently. this thread is about how these sorts of techniques can result in a new (or maybe steroid-injected) version of a familiar track. a kind of in-the-moment remix. forget about the overarching journey and focus on the details. how one specific object is altered. how is this bottled moment distorted within the maelstrom?

a couple really good examples:

HYPER ON EXPERIENCE - LORD OF THE NULL LINES (FOUL PLAY REMIX)

NUANCE AND VIKKI LOVE - LOVERIDE

try to come with some examples! examples from your own sets (cough cough @thirdform) as well...

One of my own, from 49 minutes in. Cliff Lothar - Darkhole Gloryroom sticking and looping accidentally, cutting in my own remix of a 1930s ring shout, then an ultra-obscure gospel 45 over the top.

There's a Ron Hardy mix where he's playing an obviously battered copy of Hercules - 7 Ways to Jack and it keeps skipping but still kinda works with these fucked up jarring cuts.

mvuent no one is going to be anal retentive enough to have an answer for this im afriad. nobody notices this sort of thing and if they do they instantly forget it im very sorry but that is how it is.

sounds intriguing.

i don't think it's that anal retentive. it's not about counting every scratch or crossfade just pointing out moments where you go "hey it's that famous tune but it sounds different!"

s gachet drops both versions of "lord of the null lines" at once, the mc yells "easy, gachet!" (doesn't go on for as long as i thought it did, sadly):

love the hyper-crossfaded "energy flash" in this one blissblogger uploaded:

theres never been a mix ever in my life that made even the slightest impression on me and i am the representative human. everyone is like me.

usually what happens when i start a thread is that everyone ignores it and then luka gives me meta-advice, tells me the premise is too obscure or unclear to work—and then everyone's like "ooh, new luka post, i've got to see this!" and that opens the door for my thread to reach a second or third page. this dynamic is sort of a crutch for me. i rely on it and i really shouldn't.

it got caught in a gust of wind in the storm yesterday and blew into the river

that's like saying my dog ate my homework. There are better ways to get expelled from school (an act I wholly support, when accomplished with finesse)

I often have ideas for threads like this. Ill get really excited for a moment in a tune I like and think to make an entire thread for it only to realise I can think of maybe two other moments to accompany it tops and of course no one else will be able to recall one, except for version who will wordlessly drop off a few youtube links and leave

he played this set on my birthday so I took some liberties and asked him to do a triple mix. thought it turned out pretty mental, well of course, i'd tried it myself before hand but I don't have a platter controller to fully keep shit in time.

DJ Exodus & Head Pressure - Glass Pipe Fury
Blackman - Bastards (Remix)
DJ Demo & Harlequin - Ricochet

I like the mix I did from DJ Sphinx - Enegmatic into D'cruze - 1000 years of dreams.

proper fighting each other.

The last 20 minutes of cologne acid throwdown in this one was decent also.

But tbf I can't really listen to my own mixes, so many small mistakes that most people don't notice, but I do.
