you always get a split if you get addicted to something and want to stop obviosuly. but it doesn't have to be full blown addiction, it can just be a sense of wanting to change more generally. so you're battling against some other aspect of your self. but sub personalities is something more subtle than that kind of good angel vs bad angel dichotomy.

“then there’s the repressed part of each person.” a solemn nod. well, at least grad studentorial. “often the most revealing part, sexually.”

“of course you repress, jakob,” anathema said, stroking his hand. “whatever you aren’t, your unconscious is, you know? so if you’re a skinny, sensitive, poet-type, then your unconscious is obese, uncouth, illiterate.”
