So can anyone summarise the situation right now.... I keep seeing loads of things alluding to other things but it always feels as though I have joined in in the middle of the story. I get the feeling that currently the situation is something like:

Senate - not decided but very close, could be help by Dems or not
House of Representatives - not decided yet but looks as though it will be won by Rs unless something drastic and unusual happens

Is that right?

Yes.

Delays are due to counting of early mail-in votes, except for Georgia Senate race, where neither candidate reached the 50% threshold and will now compete in a Dec 6 runoff. I believe the Dems only need to win one of the remaining three Senate races to hold, since the VP -- in this case, Kamala Harris -- presides over the Senate and votes in cases of a tie. They lead in Arizona by 5%, nearly dead even in Nevada and Georgia runoff. Arizona looks like their best shot, although there's an outside chance they could win all three.

Huge sigh of relief last night when Nevada came in for the Dems, who now continue to hold the Senate. A win in the Georgia runoff would be great but not necessary. The House is still not decided and, amazingly, the Dems actually have a (very) narrow path that could happen. I think they need to win 14 of the 20 remaining seats, so tough a climb and not likely but who knows.

essentially it means that Biden will be able to get some stuff done right? ie, it will be harder for Mitch and the boys to block legislation

Well, the House (if the GOP wins it) will block lots of what Biden wants to do and conduct all sorts of stupid investigations, so it won't be a picnic but the Senate confirms judges, so Joe will still be able to get his nominations through. You never know when Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Thomas and Coney Barrett might all pile into Alito's station wagon and hit a slick patch rounding a tight mountain bend.

While the Georgia runoff no longer matters regarding who has the Senate, it is important to Dems because if they win it, they'll be up 51-49. That mean they'll no longer be beholden to Joe Marchin, a conservative Dem Senator who has pushed back on and watered down some bills.

I see Kari Lake is now contesting her defeat - apparently there was ballot harvesting, machines stopped in the dead of night etc etc sounds very familiar eh? Dems up to their old tricks I guess. Or the new normal is Trumpers claiming it was rigged every time they get beat.
