The 'you have to hear it live' thing was a cliche but also true

As I've said before that's why it's kind of died off after the fact (at least in my social group) cos it's not really party music and nobody's got the funktion 1 soundsystem in their flat required
fair enough but i took it like "this is not very good but it sounds a bit better really loud" which i don't consider a real recommendation

Well, it's more about the physical sensation of bass – the sparseness of dubstep tracks, which simply sounds boring without the physical sense of being enveloped in that vibration

I know this makes me sound like a white man with dreadlocks but yeah

The same is true btw for really stripped back drum n bass, although with that stuff you do get more of a sense of energy from the drums

I agree that it all sounds quite boring compared to grime and doubtless the rhetoric around it at the time was unbearable but I do think the thing about seeing it 'live' holds weight, not least because I was converted to it by attending a club event (prior to that I thought it was alright, a bit boring, background music – apart from 'Request Line' which is probably one of the more grime-y dubstep tunes of that era, hence Skepta et al embracing it)

[almost as though that whole thread were a light hearted tease to amuse while having several drinks and invoking the spirit of niceness is evil]

I bought "Flowers of Evil" in translation with a parallel French text

It's very interesting to see how much has to be changed for the translation to remain poetry

But it's quite funny cos I got the audiobook in French and it rapidly put pay to any ideas I might have of being able to learn how to read French poetry without mispronouncing 95% of it

Being able to read French literature in the original is about the only good reason I can think of for learning French, other than for showing off a bit if I ever go on holiday to France

I feel liike woops is upset that something that could have become a hyper-minimalist offspring of grime ended up being good, but not necessarily great, it potentially could have gone above and beyond what it is. not even mentioning the us brostep basterd children

what are you on about dubstep was great, and a load of the writing about it at the time transformed it into something that seemed genuinely exciting. its a bit hard to make a judgement about whether all that egging on was a good thing or a bad thing in the end, maybe it meant the music itself was always going to be disappointing and we were all going to be left with this slight feeling that we'd had the wool pulled over the eyes. but it was a fun thing to engage with at the time

weirdly skream holds up for me now, whereas digital mystikz who i thought were pure gods at the time feels a bit cheesy to me now. the jamaican thing is probably what's responsible for both those stages of feeling.

obs grime was the better cousin but that's because 00s grime is best music in the world everything else pales by comparison
