If I still lived in the UK I'd have stopped by now, how can anyone afford a healthy smoking habit there nowadays? Prices are insane

quit but buy them every now and then when i'm drunk and then throw them away after smoking two coz no fucking way am i going up to randos on the street and asking anymore i'm too old, and also not really a thing, france is amazing for that, or at least was ten years ago, totally acceptable to see someone smoking and ask for one. i accept that this is ridiculous behaviour but after three beers i want to smoke and nothing is going to stop me.

correct - a phrase i always used to urge people to learn was je peux taxer une clope? marks you out as au fait with the culture

that's right, french people tax

I had my first cigarettes in years at a 30yr school reunion last month and was relieved to find I couldn't get back in to them. Full body rejection. I'd had a few mushrooms, I think that helped keep me on the right side. The 1990s were one long Marlboro Light promotional campaign, looking back. Every other Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst installation had empty packs scattered about.

Yeah people ask for fags here all the time, especially the neighbour that I've christened Cigarinho Man, but even if we disregard that extreme and borderline psychotic case, it happens all the time. To the extent that if you were say sitting at a cafe in a busy part of town, I would advise you not to leave the packet sitting on the table cos if you do loads of people will ask you for one - homeless people, hipsters, everyone else in fact - until you put them away or they get rinsed, or else you snap and start shouting at people. There is something in the Portuguese psych that resents seeing a pack of cigarettes when they themselves have none and they feel the need to remedy that by asking for one. It can get pretty annoying I haive to say. Of course no-one can know that loads of people have already asked you but still, by the fifth time in a few minutes that a stranger has demanded a cig from you it's hard to not lose your cool a little.

I would say that I know quite a lot of people here and I can think of only two don't smoke, and they are a couple. Everyone else smokes, and not one or two a day either. Think I mentioned before that they actually have ashtrays on the forecourts of petrol stations which... it fucking blows my mind, I don't care how many people smoke and how much, you still have to change your habits around dangerously flammable substances cos they aren't gonna change for you.

started casual smoking in high school (mid-teens), then had a 6-8 cigs per day habit for over 20 years. thought I was cool cuz I smoked dunhill's, which even back then were twice the cost of US brands. haven't smoked in about 20 years.

Main reason for quitting was some serious dental work at one point, dentist said I'd risk infection if I smoked while my gums were healing. The wife wasn't a fan anyway. There's also the fact that my dad and a few of my uncles all smoked and had heart attacks. Cumulative effect.
