UK Garage that sounds like electro (sort of) OR Do my job for me part 15

basically slowed down techstep.

But you know, that's what you want so.

This is pretty close too.

I suppose one thing I should say to clarify what I'm after... I don't want stuff that is TOO stop/starty or jerky. A bit of that is cool, but the stuff I normally play is not at all like that and so if I play something like that it will move from being an outlier on the edge of the set (which is what I want) to instead sound like something completely random from another set being thrown in. Or in short, the further it deviates from that straight ahead four-four beat then the harder it will be to fit in.

I see why you put them two together... are they a reworking of the same thing? Sons of Mecha one is pretty cool actually though. It's even got an electro sounding name... I will make a note of that. Seems that they got a few... or in other words their normal sound is close to what I want.

I was flicking though my records and I found this. I have never ever played this and I have no idea why I have it, I can only think that it was cos I was really into going to greyhound racing at the time. On discogs it says "breaks/electro" but I seem to remember when I bought it it was actually described as techno meets garage so in theory it should be exactly what i'm after... I might give it a try when next I play out seeing as I have it already and can test it out without buying anything.

It's an ep called Greyhound Tracks by Warlock

Which track though....

you should work on breaking the complacent trance of the portuguese with stop start syncopations imo. one thing that say berlin djs get wrong when they play garage is they always tend to go for less bumpy, more streamlined stuff. Which for me takes the fun out of it. Unless they are people like Finn Johannsen with a grounding in UK music.

Otherwise I'd just play electro. But hey just my view on things. I like streamlined in deep/dub techno but less so in house and garage.

for me a good dj forces tunes which don't really work together to work together. But I appreciate this is probably why I'm such a rubbish dj in terms of being a crowd pleaser lol.

That's actually a pretty good point. Or let's say this.... if you can make tunes that shouldn't work together, work together then that's gotta be good... the question is, would it be better for me to try that and fuck it up completely, or play safe and go for the less syncopated stuff.

Anyway, I had a crack at mixing that Warlock one (seeing as I have it) into some kind of ebm type thing and it went pretty easy, so maybe I could aim higher...

I got this tune... I think just cos I like the sounds, but it's sort of relevant here... but what style is it? Grime?

I find that one very hard to mix though... partly cos I'm shit at mixing, and partly cos it's a style that I don't play. And maybe it's a bit tricky anyway I dunno.

I bought that purely for the sonics, thought that I could fit it in somehow regardless of the style. Like maybe to start a set or as a break between two bits or something like that. Just a cool noise is all it is. Really I find it pretty hard to tell the difference between some of these genres (or are they subgenres?) - like the beat on that, even though half of it is missing, is pretty similar to some of the other stuff in this thread isn't it? Perhaps a bit stiffer I guess but Is there a big difference I'm not getting, or does the difference between grime and garage not lie in the beat? Embarrassing question maybe but what the hell I'm going for it....

like with any genres there aren't clear demarcated lines and the definition is a lot to do with scene rather than sound. one evolved from the other and a lot of this stuff was made before the term grime was even coined

More pissing around with garage/techno... cat didn't like it though as you can hear.

Seems like there is no reason not to play 'em together.

I believe the myth that this was the first grime track that you wouldn't also call garage. 2001. it's what made wiley go from 'know we' (so solid style MC-led garage) to 'eskimo' (a different thing) and both wiley and dizzee have said this
