come for the promise of tits stay because the movie turns out to be a bone chilling indictment of the state and how they countercultural figure/icons, how religion is used to levy power and why church and state should stay seperate.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before but the book it's based on, The Devils of Loudun, has quite a different emphasis to the film. It is much more explicitly about the politics and lacks the schlock of the film. Worth reading if only to contrast with the film in its different telling of essentially the same storyl.

i've considered reading it and i figured there was more to the politics at play than what could be shown in a film but i dunno i liked the schlock and camp of the movie, with Russell its very much a take it or leave it film and let's face it there's other films where he gets even more campy and over the top than The Devils.

The humour in it is both over the top and pitch black at times aswell

@IdleRich i bring it up because like all those nunsploitations use those two movies as a refference point but without either the politics of the devils or the psychological aspects or English mannerisms of Narcissus

Yeah I like the movie too (as far as I can remember). I'm certainly not saying that the book is better, just that both are good and if you have the time and inclination then seeing two treatments of the same set of events (especially really quite different treatments as here) can be an interesting thing to do in itself.

I watched The Tales of Hoffman the other day and loved it. The barcarole is one of my favorite pieces of music, but admittedly I like it more without any vocals. Plus, Shearer is excellent.

Also saw The Red Shoes a couple months back, liked that as well.

I may also start a Terrence Davies thread, assuming there isn’t one already.

What do you all think about Terence Davies? He could be Englands best living director (and maybe best UK living director?), but I also think he's up there in terms of all-time greats, alongside the likes of Hitchcock and P&P. For context, I've seen 3 P&P films, 5 Davies films, and 26 Hitchcock films.

I've never seen a Davies film, almost every Hitchcock film, and a few of Powell and Pressburger but only really like the Stairway to Heaven scene.

i scanned the crowd for craner hoping he was there and i could ambush him but i didnt see him. there were a lot of craner-a-likes though including a perfect craner jnr right in front of me. he was wearing a black turtleneck. not wool, a kind of stretch lycra mix one that even craner snr would of drawn the line at.

They've had The Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death on the BBC recently. I didn't catch the former, but the latter was great. There are these brilliant scenes where a vaguely threatening French aristocrat appears to David Niven and freezes time.

The pink and green of the garden itself is gorgeous, like something from The Wizard of Oz. The wonders of Technicolor.
