Don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of Big H. Why do people think he's so good?

you serious?!

he's the first MC since Skepta in 05/06 times to have his own completely unique flow.. so lackadaisical sounding but still completely on point.. his bars are too much.

I'll admit its probably more my dislike of his personality rather than his bars. Can't shake how pathetic he came across when he tried to take it to Wiley that time. Still, however irrational that is I definitely don't hear anything near Skepta-levels of uniqueness and originality though. I just can't stand him, sorry!

Having said that Skepta sounds curiously subdued in that video above, like he's half asleep.

heavy heavy monster sound
H is one of the few demi-flow rappers who isn't fucking embarrassing. I think that's it. I've warmed to him alot since that Spooky set. He's still a dick tho.

yeah skepta sounds pretty shit in that video tbf.. proper lean.. although i suppose it's fair enough seeing as his bars were all about the amazingly strong weed he smokes :)

thinking about it that video should have been a lot better... needed to be at least 20 mins long with a more hype beat.

going back to Big H, fair enough i can see how he might not be everyone's favourite MC but i've always liked his delivery, even back in his old Meridian days.. "who's got my money, gimme gimme gimme, anything i say yeah i mean it really".. used to love the way he really drew out the 'yeah' and then had to squeeze in the 'i mean it really' bit really quickly at the end! and i also like his 'processed meat' bars..

Surely there has to be a lot more footage of that snapback freestyle still to be released.
Don't get to hear frisc at all and it cuts away just as shorty starts..

ha! found myself enjoying that pirate radio numbers thing much more than i thought i would... shame dizzee turned his back on pirates.. he was pretty good at reading out phone numbers

It's less to do with him being a prick, more that his album had some of the most dull and redundant production known to man. If he'd have rapped over all grime beats, instead of really shitty examples of trap, we'd have something.

Big H = the reason why grime production got all trappy over the last few years, perhaps moreso than Luger worship?

Big H is a top notch comedian and next level troll.

In regards to the Grime/Trap thing, obviously it's a bit annoying that producers seem to slipping away raw that raw UK grime sound in favour of the more rounded polished trap influenced beats but you can't deny that with some MCs it just sounds better. I think the future of Grime is without a doubt in the hands of producers making tracks for the dancefloor, with maybe an MC trying to get a few bars in for the calmer beats. e.g Royal T/Spooky at a Butterz night.

Skip to 01:02:50 in that JustJam video and you'll see Bossman and Dan go in over the trap/grime stuff and it sounds great.

Also skip to 01:15:00 for the massive Skepta par from Big H.
(when it gets put on youtube i'll change these to timestamped links)

It's the combination of attitude and flow that makes Big H such a fascinating figure in grime. The ambiguity surrounding everything he does is the reason for his almost cult following. About a week ago (Just over 2 months after the video was posted) the Bloodline After Hours hit 100,000 views. That's more views than the JME and Tempa T video even after a month ahead (which after 3 months has 88,000 views).

It's hard to tell how much of what he says is a joke or real and whether anything in his bars is true. But it's that doubt and wanting to know more that keeps people hooked on him.

He's also been responsible for some of Grime Dailys best video content. The interviews in the Bloodline HQ and all the KFC/Car interviews are undeniably entertaining.

The real mystery is, how self-aware he is.
