nah, i spent a lot of time skiving about as a student and converted all that edumacation into the not that impressive career path that you see before you

this is bad
it was brilliant. spent all the student funding* on travelling, then spent the year in the library reading up on all the places i'd visited, then scraped through the unrelated coursework by the skin of my teeth,
you'd be fine, unless you take it all very seriously turn out to be an orrible swot

*this was he 90s

i did a course in birkbeck a couple of years ago too - that was quite shit though, soas bar is carded entry these days, and the era of cheap student food is long gone - it's £4.70 for a coffee and free veggy slop from the hare krishnas

First year archaeology is a lazy haze fest. Until you do your first dig. I realised then that it was much better to work in later prehistory and early historical sources than experience arthritis in waterlogged trenches before middle age. Pretty cosmic when that penny dropped

I guess Coil played a part in the archaeological imagination, Jarman too, fuck even old Copey. The archaeological imagination and creative writing are old friends. Everyone worth a read has ploughed into these furrows. Go for it, the world is borked for a bit. Why not blaze a light through a poetic jumper no-one else has imagined

i wanted to be an archeologist when i was a child but i got bullied out of it at school. charles olson, jh prynne (and peter riley) are massive on the archeology

Did a couple around the Dartmoor Reaves. It rained like the place was possessed. Beautiful landscapes but a nightmare trying to fight the elements

Later prehistory offered classical sources and actual names, which seemed a bit futile initially when you’re knee deep in cosmic monuments, but then I realised they feed into Yeats and so many other inspiring writers

That intersection between the past and our imagination is one of the more interesting ones to delve into - gods in the hedgerows
