wow, that's a lot. i mean, loads.

neurofunk
liquid
clownstep

these are just absurd names for (sub-)genres, the lot of them. as an aside, has anyone ever done a 'ridiculously named micro-scenes' thread? if not, why not?

another q which isn't really about music nerd cred, but:

does anyone ever identify themselves as making 'intelligent d'n'b'? like really wear it as a badge of pride? i just can't imagine a producer in any genre ever feeling good about saying they make 'intelligent music'.

Heh, you could have a thread about "Drum'n'bass between 150 and 160", only it'd refer to IQ, not BPM. :)

Wasn't there talk of "mechstep" at one point? Doc Scott's Unofficial Ghost I think might have been an example (techstep but more mechanical or metallic than techno?) - and what a great track - possibly the best of that Rufige Kru Darkrider/Terminator lineage!

Didn't Simon Reynolds invent "Neurofunk" for a late 90's Wire article, partly in the hope that it would catch on and sound the death knell of the whole of drum and bass?

'Mechstep' makes me think of these:

Madcat.gif

And while I like the idea of 'neurofunk', it smacks just a little too much of someone who's a bit too into William Gibson/Ghost In The Shell/Johnny Mnemonic/The Matrix for his own good...

Wicked, I might have to check that out.
Techno can never be too roboty as far as I'm concerned.

IDM?

i think there were many people that proudly said they made "IDM". Although, i still think that was one of the dumbest names in music.

Coolest name not yet used? Loungecore

........a day late and a dollar short......?

i was thinking more along the lines of lounge samples over heavy metallic beats and echoey guitars. maybe some "armpit bass".

Mentalism.

What is it, and where did the name come from?

Ive seen a few posts in the "modern DnB is rubbish" thread referring to early 90s dnb. so, where did the name come from, and what did it sound like?

then theres this at boomkat which seems to include some breakcore and acid.

How do the two terms relate, if at all?
