Colloquially it just means madness (and is practised by 'mentalists'). Properly speaking though, it means pretending to read people's minds...

right, theres the performing art, "magic".

but there also seems to be a musical genre..... does this have anything to do with the magic?

"now im really confused.

why was that funny?"

Sorry for the parochial link.

When I was at school in the early 80's, "mental" was a playground/schoolyard pejorative for dumb, stupid etc. As in "XXXX you're a mental case. And a bender"

Rave, with its love of juvenelia, resurrected the use of the word.

"Mentaaal!" or even "Mental, Mental, Radio Rental*" were cries of appreciation, yelled through car windows on the way to parties or on the dancefloor.

Joey Beltram's world-famous and ever popular "mentasm stab" fed into the whole thing.

An easy jump, therefore to "Mentalism".

i'm 18, so i guess it's ok. I dunno, maybe i just listen to way too much minimal but shit that jumps around too much makes me nervous haha. Nah, that's not true, I just think i'd rather listen to freestyle/early house than early techno/electro if i was forced to choose one from the same period.

is it ok for me not to enjoy listening to model 500?

Oh yeah. I’m not particulary fond of the general output of Atkins (or the other founding fathers) either. I tend to greatly prefer the period up until 1984-ish and the period after 1991. Horses for courses. That being said, if you are at all into modern dance music you are bound to find at least a couple of tracks of theirs that speak to your heart.

oh yeh i definitely do - i don't mean to seem like i'm wholly discounting an entire period of generally amazing music. I'm just being a miserable git. :(

What's ruffneck mean, as in

'it's me, the lyrical ruffneck Roachee, and i'll standardly bore a man in his knee'

and i'm sure ive heard it in loads of jungle tunes. I know it means badman/don dadda/gargan etc. but wondering about any more accurate etymology.

bore a man in his knee doesn't mean he's so boring he'll go for a persons knee, cos that's the only part that might listen, a rebore is a shitty gun and bore is shoot.
