what is a showerman/showerface anyway?

i know jammer's one, and so is maximus, but why?

ha! i remember being totally confused by this when i went and saw the MCs at Rinse! Showerface! (and everyone errupts?!?!?)

i thought it might have something to do with th expression you had when you were in the shower (drags hand down face to mimic water) that kind of face dripping wet expression. though what that means?

here you go me from a thread a few weeks back had this explained to me yesterday -

showerface is the grimace a badman pulls when he sprays bullets in ja slang
i think there is a gang called the shower gang or something cos of the mass of bullets they use to kill...
so it's that kind of ubermench death/sex face - a kind of evil orgasm as the power of life and death over others takes hold.
my words not the person who explained it..

the adaptation of all the shower curtain stuff is just cos it's funny and odd i think.

Nice thread idea.

I for one am always mystified whenever k-punk gets all philosophical in his posts. Whenever I see him (not to single him out, but he's the major culprit in my view) mention Deleuze, Spinoza, Lacan, Zizek, or Badiou (note: I would never have remembered those names on my own; I had to search) I immediately think, "Over my head," and scroll down to the next post.

That's not to say I wouldn't like to know what he's talking about. Can anyone suggest some nice layman's books so I don't have to feel like a troglodyte so much of the time?

There's a hyperlink theory list I put together a fair few months ago when someone else asked the same thing - it includes links to intros and interviews with and about Badiou, Zizek, etc:

You could try reading some of the less fierce books by Badiou and Zizek - they're really not that off-putting, honest! Try Badiou's Ethics or Infinite Thought and maybe Zizek's book on 9/11, Welcome to the Desert of the Real. All three books are pretty short and about general issues, so don't require too much specialist knowledge.

when did 'old skool' hardcore become 'old skool'? Did it become old skool pretty much as soon as the split between jungle and happycore occurred? I remember at the World Dance NYE party I went to in '96 there was an Old Skool Arena billed as such, playing tunes that (at that point) were no more than a couple years old.

Anyone remember when the switch happened?

OK, here's mine, which is kind of ironic given the thread.

I Know all the references in LCD Soundsystem's Losing My Edge bar one... something about having all the Niagra records on German import. I assume this isn't the Lux Nigra IDM label so what is it?

He means Niagara, the krautrock group. But all the references are bull, right?

Klaus Weiss's band innit. On that Kraut veers into Jazz Funk tip.

i guess its one of those things that crept up/is telelogically reappointed all the time?!?

maybe you've nailed the historical moment (same time as the rootsification of jungle) maybe general levy's incredible could be the watershed?

however another part of me thinks that maybe 1993 darkcore-era stuff was never really old skool, and the twin tribes of junglists/happy were still together at that point. maybe the swerve from the original barrage of helium vocals to the dark stuff . when the e stopped working that forms the dividing moment.

I assume Matt has copies of all these! There are three albums - Niagara (the Breast one), S.U.B, and afire (i think that is the title).

The latter will put you back about two hundred notes if you ever find it, Niagara about 50, and SUB crops up on the cheap (mainly cos it isn't as amazing as the others). Drop me a PM and I can send you a CDR of the stuff if you want as I spent a fair spell of time gathering it when WAY too skint to buy (or find!) the records.
