Sometimes people talk about it as a kind of aggression, a weapon, but basically it's just a stylistic touch

Do you know what the arrow signifies in graffiti?

Luka is right but just to develop that slightly, you can see it as a way of getting kinetic energy into a static form. Lots of graff touches suggest or imply movment - lines showing wobbles, letters cracking and melting, splashes of paint are about something similar. I think NY pioneer Phase 2 was the person who first used the arrow but I might be wrong. If you think about the flat but mobile surfaces of NY subway cars as the first graffiti canvas, arrows kinda fit.

Lots of graffiti is about bringing these illusory qualities into the piece - complexity and camoflague added to letters in wildstyles, or 3D and shadow adding depth, size and monumentality, for instance. Some writers have really taken this to the next level, making sculptural complex letter forms - Daim from Hamburg is the guy I really think of here, who kicked this off.

His pieces remind me of Zaha Hadid's architecture.

i remember walking past a Daim piece in Plaistow in the 90s. was pretty mind blowing at the time.

His stuff is unreal. Do you know the old hall of fame opposite West Ham station Luka? An old school writer, Check has been posting some pieces from there back in the 80s and 90s.

i first got into graffiti when i switched primary schools to Portway in Plaistow and made friends with a boy from West Ham. He was doing outlines and stuff and told me about the wall there. That's how he'd learned about graf. I never saw it in real life I don't think. Me and Edmund walked past the Plaistow one the other day and it looks like The Man is trying to get rid of it just to be evil.

I used to walk past the Plaistow one on my way home from 6th form college. I saw stuff by Daim, Mode 2, Giant, Get, Skore, new ones by Keen all the time....
