thanx BD...

theres_a_fire_deep_in_the_voodoo_magic_hill. mp3

a mashup of an omen remix of a loefah tune and a native american flute song...

heres the story...

...my bro came round, we're getting irie and I'm playing some tunes off the puter. He's never heard any dubstep so i start him off with 'milanese' and i can see it's fully doing his head in...heheh

so i switch to playing some world music of the flute variety and after the intro it gets a bit meh so I open up Omens remix of Loefah's Voodoo in another app. The tune was ripped from his myspace a while back...

...and what do you know ??? not only are they in time and in key but they finish at exactly the right time together

need less to say we're buzzing so a quick lineup in 'acid', saved as an mp3 and voila...

...since then I been thrashing it. I just find it really calming despite the 'fucking voodoo magic' sample which is weird cos on their own 'Voodoo' is all dark and menacing and on it's own 'Theres a fire' is all OTT new age but together they balance out

a native american, buffalo nation flute song mixed with some remixed dark sth side london dubstep containing a sample of a jamaican from a 'predator' movie then mixed together by a polynesian

given that they were recorded/remixed with no knowledge of each others tune in different times and locales by different cultures then mashed together in another time and locale is what makes it interesting. No fancy edits, no beatmatching or time stretching just like the 'burial and dead truth' tune i screwed

...it's like it shouldn't work but it does. I guess thats what the 21st century smorgasbord of culture/art clash has in store for us with dubstep and it's ethnic samplings being the prime example for music...sounds of the global village with no cultural boundaries

...this tune more than any sums up my musical year. Nu age ambient and dubstep.

Have ya selves a good one...

cheers

skream came out with a set of almst totally generic dance music, or at least dubstep that had encompassed all the generic run of the mill aspects of very bland dancemusic....
Sounds like I'd have liked it :)

loefah and mala get move in more opposite directions than ever before, mala getting soulful with alot of rare groovey samples etc.. loefah getting deeper and more rugged. superb but a strange gap to reconcile
Too right... but is it true they did the Alicia Keys refix together? Something I read somewhere...

7 dubstep related things i'd like to see/hear this year...

london
a scuba album
real songs not tunes/beats
more headz making their way to NZ
dubstepforum from my home puter...:D
dubstep soundtrax to more gritty futuristic films
collaborations between ambient nu age musos and dubstep producers

^^^well rather than sample some out of context bit from a nu age or ethnic ambient piece...

...just record them live and chop them up later

i thought i read shackleton was doing some shit with a mid eastern percussionist or something ???

I'd rather that than some poxy jazz dude or the like ...

i'd rather hear something original than every last generic musical idea being recycled over a halfstep

when making a tune, one should ask one's self: "how would this sound at starbucks?"

if the answer is anything other than "send them runnin for the hills" then start over. :p

all of shackleton's material has been on this kind of tip, albeit in his own inimitable style, which I think is about a million miles ahead of simply re-using and re-slicing riffs from other pieces of music.

To me, his material shows a deep and complex understanding of the concepts underpinning a lot of 'ethnic' music, which he has digested and then combined with the skill he has developed for using the technology that he has available to him.

i.e. his percussion, whilst being obviously synthesised and (pre) sequenced has that improvisatory, middle eastern feel to it, with shifting accents, intricate polyrhythms and melodies created within these rhythms from pitched hits.

And the way he uses more obvious melodic features too, is beautiful in a simple, and cleverly applied way. no lazer arpeggiated stabs, but rather simple swathes of textures, and occasional riffs, using alternate tunings, whose 'personality' is deeply interwoven with the emotional fabric of the song. 'Naked' is the best example of this I think (using an Indian Tuning)... what a song!

Plus the riffs he makes with sub bass and etc. etc .etc.

In short, Shackleton seems to be making music from some time waaaay into the future. A big big big producer from whatever angle you look from.

i have it on a cd-r with a couple of other remixes which unfortunately probably won't be allowed to come out. he's sitting on a lot of really good tunes.

anyone listening to RinseFM right now, "tracks a bit aggressive, that's how i feel when sitting in traffic" it's Distance i reckon, it's so bowel renching i guess it must be him?

sounds like he's playing stuff off his new album, it's like a new metal-step ting.

Did anyone listen to the Benga / Skream Breezeblock set the other day? I'm not sure if everyone but me already knew this, but in the 'so what are you up to at the moment' spiel they mentioned that they've got an idea to put out an LP of "futuristic stuff, crazy stuff... stuff that we've not been brave enough to put out."

Sounds interesting...

Oh and Nemesis is a BAD TUNE!!!
