A fellow Midwesterner! You far north? I'm near Lake Superior and the windchill this week got down to -40. The whole winter's been so balmy, and then bam! Freezin my bum off!

No I'm closer to the Mississippi, on the border between 'Midwest' and 'South'. I did live in Minnesota for a while though, so I feel for you about the weather

There are probably a lot of filmic/media depictions of that rural hostility. And of ones where a veneer of friendliness is quickly unveiled for something darker. Dogville maybe.

I'm always looking for examples of this, because the feel of the midwest is actually driving me crazy. I want a full-out horror movie that takes place in that world, but it's kind of hard for me to articulate what makes it specific so I'm sure it would be hard to focus in on it artistically

Yeah, I like Blue Velvet. Ari Aster wrote that his next movie would have the look of a "Cheesecake Factory", and that sounds like it might make for another good example

That's why I'm here, I kept stumbling on music threads during lockdown boredom and it was harder to lurk as a guest because you had to manually find your last read posts, so it made sense to register. You lucky people should be hopeful I don't find a new job any time soon.
