It always seems a bit weird when that is never addressed at all. Those ones where the protagonist and maybe one other person survive kill night and somehow defeat the seemingly invincible monster... they emerge blinking and smiling into the light. I mean I'm sure they're glad to have survived but your think, are you not at all bothered that seven of your best friends and all of your family have been killed and your house has been destroyed? It's got to be slightly traumatic even if you've killed the beast once and for all until installment 7.

I guess no-one want to see a gruelling psychological study into Sarah Michell-Geller's character recovering from the Last Summer killings but there is probably space for something to happen between that and "Yay I fucking won!".

Sicario was on telly last night. I've seen it before and I didn't enjoy it at all but somehow on this second (or third) viewing something clicked and it made a lot more sense. There are some brilliantly tense moments (the protracted scene where they bring the kingpin back across the border was the only bit I did like last time) and a dark atmosphere. Sure the ending just does turn into this kinda ridiculous shoot-out with one man infiltrating the baddies' castle and killing everyone (a bit like Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia in fact) but this time it didn't spoil everything that went before somehow.... and I just enjoyed every little scene on the way better than the last time, I realised how well it was put together, seeing things that foreshadowed later scenes that i hadn't picked up on previously.

the bigger question is why do you rewatch a film you didn't like at all the first time an additional one or two more times, LOL? glutton for punishment or just not much else on Portuguese tv?

anyone into straight to video stuff? Bleeding Skull are ace for reissuing lost gems. Recently THE MCPHERSON TAPE has been given the Bluray treatment. I love both the original 80s version and also the 98 TV short.

Cold Case Hammerskj?ld. Danish documentary from last year. Really gripping insights into the shady forces of post-colonial Africa. Secret para-military organisations, Belgian mercenaries, white supremacist pseudo-scientists, strings of suspicious deaths and dark funding networks involving several governmental agencies.

Begins with the investigating the plane crash and death of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammerskj?ld in 1961. Ends up uncovering the operations set up to spread HIV among the black population of South Africa in the 80s.

Told in a good way too. From the point of view of the director and investigator who fancies himself in the role of the rogue journalist. Which he?s honest about when he admits that the truth was becoming more fucked up than any narrative he could have constructed.

Theres obviously an artistic vision playing with the conspiratorial mythological at times cartoony figures and plots but it doesn?t take anything away from the gravity of the crimes in question.

There was a film on telly the other day that was basically a load of bollocks in terms of plot but I did really like the visual style - it was called Bunraku and it had loads of famous people in it but really the only interesting thing was how it looked (apart from Ron Pearlman inexplicably letting the side down with some horrible crusty dreads). To be honest I'm not big into fighting films.... so if they had taken out most of the fight scenes and RP I would have liked it more.
I like films with this kind of half-cartoon style (Sin City, Renaissance, Sky Captain etc) are there any that are actually good?

This evening watched something I've meant to get around to for ages, happily my friend had a copy, anyway Greaser's Palace, written and directed by Robert Downey Sr and described as a kind of acid western and Christ allegory or satire depending on your perspective I suppose. Ultimately more interesting than good i'd say... a few cool lines ("in that case come inside and let me suckle on your stingaree" stood out somehow) and some interesting moments plus imagery but nothing compared to the other classic acid western from two years earlier El Topo. It has small roles for Toni Basil and Herve Villechaise plus a cameo from a seven year old Robert Downey Jr but ultimately - unlike the only other of his films that I've seen Putney Swopes - the satire doesn't really bite now if it ever did. I would like to see Pound which is the one he did before this.
I did like the agent character who kinda looks like someone from Dalston, right down to the platform boots and skinny trousers

Reminded me a little of that Coffin Joe one where he comes out of the sea and starts doing magic and causing trouble. What's it called?

Nochexxx, those films look interesting, tell me more about them.

The McPherson Tapes was presented to me as if it was a real found footage of an alien abduction, laughable, 2 minutes into it, you realise it's anything but that.

i do love a good hoax, or uploads of events purported to be real though. sites like Disclosure (a YT for the paranormal iirc), which i think has now ceased would circulate all this stuff. so it's partly the delivery mechanisms that make it fun too.

quite often there are question marks regarding the authenticity of these videos, so they have a tendency to take on a life of their own (Patterson Gimlin bigfoot tapes for example). at the the ridiculous end of the spectrum you have stuff like the Dr Reed alien encounter videos. the production values, gorilla film making techniques involved are a joy to behold. i think of these videos/uploads as another substrate of exploitation films.

seeing as The McPherson Tapes is often mentioned in the same breath as The Blair Witch Project, what found footage films do people recommend? i thought REC was pretty decent.

Your Name - anime movie in which two Japanese schoolkids (one in Tokyo, one in the countryside) inexplicably start body swapping on a regular basis.
