The Departed is a dumb movie, it's true. It's full of swaggering machismo (there's basically one woman in it) and very superficial glances at morality.

But it's very well done, very entertaining... I dunno if that's "enough" to recommend it, but I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

The Departed is a ton of fun. You just have to take it as you might an action film.
Think a film like There Will Be Blood fits right into this type but manages to elevate itself by turning over into a lampoon of that same culture

A while back I got really into Bringing Out the Dead then rewatched it with a mate after telling him how great it was and ended up sitting through the whole thing like "Christ, this is awful. What was I thinking?!".

I find if I really think about something I like then I just end up seeing the faults more clearly and start to dislike it. It's much easier to dislike than to like, liking things is very fragile. That's why a Luka or a Craner can whisper in your ear like Lucifer and ruin things you thought you were into.

Something about watching a movie at home alone or in a cinema where you can't talk, you might end up enjoying something without being able to admit it to anyone else, in a way you couldn't admit to, either. As soon as you expose that inner feeling to others it becomes embarrassing or somehow diminished. An indulgence, or a failing.

I hate watching films with people. If I'm with someone, I like to socialize. I can sit silently in front of a screen on my own.
Thats the worst bit of culture to come from ubiquitous streaming services. Going over to a buds to watch The Office is seen as socializing. Its not uncommon for people to just leave it running on the tube at a low volume while other things are happening, like visual muzak.

I get watching sports together or maybe a film everyone's seen before and doing drinking games based around it or something, but just watching a film or TV series is bizarre. It's like inviting someone over to read a book next to you.

One Scorsese film I've never liked is Gangs of New York. One of the worst films I've ever seen. Shockingly bad.
