confucious - i really want to hear anthony braxton's ghost trance music - do you know any good examples ?

that just sounds great.

I have a double live disc and a studio recording... can't remember what they're called but the phrase "ghost trance" was on one of them. sorry not much help... a search on Amazon found nothing... guess you'll just have to read all 3 volumes of Triaxiom! (just kidding)

I remember there was a release on the Australian label Dorobo back in the '90s, where someone was credited with "faulty record head", which seems to fit the hauntology tag from a technological angle.

Saw Thomas Koner's video/drone piece "From the Outskirts of Nothing to the Suburbs of the Void" thing last night. Visually it was all haunted empty landscapes, surveillance cam stills, layered figures meshing in ghostly fashion. The audio was his standard droney layering contrast with children laughing periodically and a patch of sinister murmuring.

While watching it struck me that repetition is in itself spectral, as the loop invokes its ghost in the form of memory which is shifting and formless.

Boards of Canada

I've just embarked on an essay on Boards of Canada, mainly focusing on Music has the Right to Children and trying to get the bottom of why and how it still evokes something so intangible within me...

I've been reading Freud on the uncanny and screen memories, looking at some writings on nostalgia, and then I've run into this idea on hauntology- has anyone any suggestions for interesting papers / books I should head on the direction of?

Thanks a lot.

there was a fantastic article on the boards of canada in the wire a year or so ago, it was the first time ive ever heard them open up in an interview to talk on their compositional strategies and studio processes.

On another point, if Look Around You is getting heaped on the hauntology pile then does the often ignored but fantastic Garth Mareneghi's darkplace qualify? its one of the most perfect period pieces ive seen, the detail on the poorness of the chromakeying etc. Its worth the price of the dvd for todd rivers 'One track lover' song in the broccoli episode.

so what happened to hauntology, has it just part of the atmosphere now?
Do we have a definition as yet or is the spectral nature part of the spectral word?

oh the difference between when we started talking about hauntology and applying some though to it and the swift reply of jokes about it 'in a pub style' is very telling.
oh dear.

I was just kidding around because the category seems so vague, you could probably throw almost anything in there.

Did anyone mention Rentaghost? If you grew up in the UK in the 70s there is indeed something a bit Haunto about those clips on youtube.

Haha, no way, this is too weird - I was thinking about Rentaghost today for some reason, must be the first time it's crossed my mind in the better part of 20 years...'spooky', you might almost say. :)

"The idea of hauntology and the question of Marx's continued relevance has been criticised by a number of philosophers including Jurgen Hambermas, Richard Rorty, Miller Quitney and Dom Passantino."
