and if your environment isn't keeping up appearances you don't have to. it's why people prefer their pubs to be a little shabby. you can't get satisfactorily drunk in a place that's too bright and clean. it induces a sense of shame.

Beast of Burden
They must have had books, at least? I can't believe you didn't grow up in a house with books in it.

My mother mostly had fashion magazines, which is now an incredible archive that I used to document when I started using Instagram.

Obviously I was being facetious there but I have heard that argument from elders before re: Thatcher. That the country was totally fucked before she got in, etc.

But then reading this brings me out in hives

"I think we have gone through a period when too many children and people have been given to understand "I have a problem, it is the Government's job to cope with it!" or "I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!" "I am homeless, the Government must house me!" and so they are casting their problems on society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then also to help look after our neighbour and life is a reciprocal business and people have got the entitlements too much in mind without the obligatio"

you hear the whole gaumt of opinion from saved it to tore it apart. we're all too young to really know but what we are doing is looking at the images and mythologies, and listening to the music, and trying to recreate the atmospheres of those years in our minds and what those periods might represent to us. what we feel drawn towards and why. what those yearnings tell us about what we lack in the present.

as vimothy says we feel powerfully drawn to that '70s shabbiness precisely becasue we feel so oppressed by the absence of it today. we feel oppressed by the fascist imagery of glamour. we want to escape from the world of the image more than anything.

this is what vimothy was saying and what oliver was reinforcing with those images

Speak for yourself, I love the glamorous world, I just wish I was actually living in the glamour rather than observing it from afar like a rotund child smushing his nose against a cake shop window

Horrible coming out of the clean world into the rubbish strewn world

Suddenly you're in ASDA, the contactless isn't working properly, it's all very 1970s and you yearn to escape back to cleanworld
