that's what I was referring to in the comment you quoted. "rumsfeld's forgotten unknown knowns". I wasn't saying that rumsfeld was particularly ideological, just that ideology is different from "stuff you don't like". it's much closer to "stuff you don't know you like" - and the failures of the iraq war provide examples of it in action

less lead in the air has made us all much less violent - knuckle sandwiches are not really a thing any more are they

i remember school in bristol it was routine, each teacher had their own signature type of violence, mr Siddall would crack you on the skull with a single knuckle, Mr Gillete was notorious with the flying board rubber, mr lewin had a special way to grab a handful of hair and twist it, mr clay had a big stick called the persuader - he was teh art teacher
thinking about this lot of bullies, and life in the 70's generally, these brutes had been through ww2. I remember Mr Clay had been a sailor and got his boat sunk in the med.
I think we've probably re-upped this trauma in our society with iraq and afg :(

Absolutely - unprocessed trauma, residual, waiting for a face to rearrange. You could add Korea and the Falklands in there too, IRA bombings everywhere. A few of our school’s psycho teachers, the ones prone to violent forms of discipline, were Korean veterans. Mr Costello who would hang you by your shirt off a coat hanger and leave you there choking on your tie, Mr Hurley too whose wife had been shot by the UVF had a breakdown right in front of us, and Mr Dawkins who would just knock kids out.

Thing about catholic schools, apart from all the pederasts, were the nuns. Sister Dennis Mary, ‘Little Hitler’, who would scrub your fingers if you got busted smoking until they were raw. Sister O’Donnell and her serrated rulers, Sister Agatha and her thuggish RE lessons. Like something out of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, you won’t see such sadists profiled in Call the Midwife.

Sister Mary David once threatened me with a savaging from her greyhound, Sammy, who she said was hiding behind a curtain in her office, after a playground ruck. It worked! I never went near a nun's curtains ever again.

You could keep them out of schools by banning faith schools, but that’s rocky ground. I doubt it’s as bad these days, but knives and blades were common.

By no means glorifying it, but football‘s spark has lost its grimness. Yes Old Firm and Easter Rd Capital City Service both shocking for getting slashed. Watching Forest and Notts County doesn’t really compare, unless it was Leeds, Stoke, Sheffield Weds/Utd, Hull, Cardiff and the capital city lot like Millwall, Chelsea, ICF and Spurs. Smaller clubs in cup games could be the sketchiest - Oldham, Walsall, Darlington and Hartlepool, Plymouth (savages, just look at America), Tranmere, Man City...

Football is increasingly grim Britannia and Europe has it too.

my parents are born again Christian's and they had this book called the cross and the switch blade, about missionaries in '70s New York. I remember it as proper heart of darkness stuff. I used to read is as a child for the descriptions of the gang violence and get off on all of the squalid but nevertheless exciting scenes

That's quite dark.
took its place in a list of nasty games that included snipes (skinning each other’s knuckles with cards after each lost game),
We used to do this at school. If you lost the game you cut the pack and I think it was something like red was scrapes, black was hits and (say) Spades or Hearts meant it was hard whereas Clubs or Diamonds was soft. Obviously the number you cut was how many you got. As people got older and stronger if you got a lot of hard scrapes or hard hits you were in a lot of trouble, blood everywhere.

i think his point is that it's not that abnormal and that the stories that get cherry picked make this sort of brutality seem exceptional but it's not

It's fairly exceptional for young kids to kidnap an even younger kid and kill him isn't it?

I guess the idea is that this is the tip of a very large and shitty iceberg, the rest of it consisting of incidents that are less extreme than murder but still pretty unpleasant.
