not sure, but the scummy video totally ruined the song for me with its over literalism. the brianstorm one could have been good too, what with the R&B style dancing girls and all that but even that looks a bit ropey and like 3 videos smashed into one.

I like the fact that they've used all that free footage from that archive but it's sooooooo badly done, is it their mates doing the videos? Or is it Domino commissioning deliberately bad ones to make them look more street? There's something going on there that I'd like to hear from the horse's mouth, I can't believe that anyone looked at the finished 'Brainstorm' one and thought 'Yeah, that's fuckin kickin'. I CAN believe that they saw it and thought, 'yeah, that's wrong enough to be right', thinking which makes me feel a bit ill.

Just watched the Brianstorm video on youtube to see how bad it was...
Yeah, it's awful! At first I thought that it was meant to be from the point of view of someone flicking channels between them and an rnb video, then all that 50s style stock footage comes in (HUGE cliche for at least 20 years) then all the 80s yuppie holiday brochure stills...

It's just a total fucking mess.

Crap song, too (obviously).

The same feeling they inspire in me...as though their manager/Domino Records/Alex Turner whoever sit down and carefully calculate everything to show how "authentic" they are. When anyone with any nous who doesn't want to be conned can see straight through it.

I find this "Sheffield as a theme park" shit that they peddle particularly galling. As Aleksy said it relates to some mythological idea of the working-class that if it ever existed outside the minds of the London media hasn't for about 50 years

Everything they do reeks of this I didn't know about the WMC gigs in Barnsley until I read it on here but when I did I almost gagged. I can just see it now hoardes of students from Sheffield swarming through a WMC in somewhere like Darfield or Athersley. I don't know but it has shades of the worst kind of "ironic" student "slumming it". Wonder if they started mouthing off about "chavs" whilst they were there?

For the benefit of the Southerners I'll explain. The age of the average WMC member is 60+ and definitely not the kind of place that puts on indie bands...usually if you dont look like you'd come off a 70's edition of Opportunity Knocks you wont get on...so it seems like a some sort of dubious plan to construct a mythology was in place from the beginning.

Actually I'm surprised the whole concept wasnt tried years ago as after all its the the NME's wet dream a band who they can kid themselves are from "the streets" but aren't embarrassing like the real thing eg Oasis.

I've seen small bands play in working mens clubs tons of times in the Newcastle/Northumberland area. These places need the money and custom! There's nothing strange or ironic or slumming about it.

yeah but the precise reason theyre not from "the streets" is because nobody on "the streets" listens to fucking indie. when i was at school (in the 1999-2002ish cusp) everybody listened to rnb, eminem, that awful 'ska-punk' hybrid, nirvana and nu-metal. oh and trance. it was only the posher kids from the villages (of which i was certainly one) who listened to indie. where the fuck are their bands?

I think the north-east must be very different from down here (and in Lancashire) the 2 places I have experience off (and no I'm not personally over 60!). Yes I know they're desperate to attract punters hence the fact that at the rate they're presently shutting it's thought there wont be any left in about 15 years. But the last thing they want to do is alienate their core audience. About the "trendiest" you'll usually get is a Queen or Rod Stewart tribute or something and they won't be invited back if they were too loud. Think about it do you think the average 67 year old ex-miner wants to listen to indie?
But yes if you were lucky and persistant/had some nefarious plan/made it worth his while I'm sure you could twist the Social Secretary's arm...

Shit once again by debating minutiae like this I'm the fucker responsible for making this terrible "band" go to the top of the thread again! Bollocks!

Crikey how bitter...Loads of events go on in Sheffields WMC/Pubs. Why? Because no-one can afford the £650 rents nightclubs charge and there are no small venues. We've done loads of events in pubs and clubs, I'm a big fan of the WMC vibe, spent post Friday and Saturday nights in them as a kid.

I don't think is calculated at all, it's what they are like.

I'm not fussed on the Arctic Monkeys, but have taken the trouble to buy the Last Shadow Puppets album as I'm quite enchanted by the single ('The Age of Understatement' - bit of a daft title I know).

I like that single too. Its got a bit of a classic Echo and the Bunnymen vibe to it for me.

i do like this a lot

album i cant make my mind up about, not sure if its a grower, but it doesnt have the strong standouts like the last one. seems like its all about the vibe/atmosphere/strings etc rather than melodies and songs or lyrics even. seems quite spare on those fronts.

Easy to say now, but it's crazy how badly some of the posts in this thread aged

I know AM were comically overhyped (that's the UK music industries' fault, not theirs) but you had grown men shitting on a bunch of actual 19 year olds like they were personally orchestrating of the death of modern music and culture or something with their simple guitar tunes. maybe they were just young my dudes! filing this away in the "historical reasons to not hate teenagers for the things they make" section of my brain

all the new AM stuff post 2010 has been consistently surprising and good imo

i cant make up my mind about the new one (at first i loved the strings, now im thinking theyre just a bit over present). it seems like hes trying on a lot of different modes from song to song more or less (hes also being a lot less wordy than he usually is, which is a bit of a shame), but im not sure hes totally mastered them yet. a lot of the songs end quite abruptly too - mirrorball actually ends before it seems to have really concluded, on marvin gaye whats goin on/i want you vibe actually.
