I remember years ago I went to this thing in stockwell or somewhere like that, it was kpunk doing londonunderlondon and kode9 was there and all I can remember was kodwo talking about how kpunk had took all these sounds and orphaned them. He kept saying that word. I hear wiley, but he's orphaned etc. I don't know why that's the thing that stuck with me from the night. Afterwards I went to my mates house and got stoned, he beag me at chess 3 times in a row.

male pale and stale
hat and beardby Kodwo Eshun (to be published Summer 2007)
The star attraction of the 1967 Legalise Pot Rally was beat patriarch and American sadhu Allen Ginsberg. Astride a stepladder, he is caught on camera delivering his speech to five thousand hippies. Lurking beneath the stepladder, barely visible in the frame, is the pensive face of a man preoccupied with his own thoughts. He, though, is not thinking about legalising marijuana. He is somewhere and someone else entirely: Michael de Freitas, Michael X, Abdul Malik: a figure whose multiple names indicate a predilection for metamorphosis. From this oblique point of departure, Eshun charts an inventory of becomings, a series of moments from an era of embarrassments and enchantments that constituted the dawning of British Black Power. Excavating fragments and poetics from sources that range from Godard’s ‘One Plus One’ to the Congress of the Dialectics of Liberation, from Soft Machine’s ‘Rivmic Melodies’ to the radical newspaper ‘Black Dwarf’, Eshun assembles a constellation of unlikely coincidences, second hand futures and inoperative dystopias that collectively exert a pressure on the certitudes of the present.

Hat and Beard is printed offset in an edition of 1,000 copies.

It was in Vauxhall. I went to that, because I was on it and it was around the corner from where I was living.

Yes I think I maybe walked to stockwell after or something. They literally just played the cd and we all listened

Kode9 was outside chaining fags when I arrived, everyone looked really tired. Good tho. Just sitting in a little room in South London listening to a cd then kodwo says he can hear wiley but he's orphaned

I read the autobiography ages back but can’t remember much about it. Was interested in that book you mention but might give it a swerve. You want the whole epic Hollywood drama not some sociology text.

Yeah it's someone who's really taken the life out of it and made it into something completely boring. Also it was all about mad Michael x and not about the times he was in. Really annoyed me.
