some people (eg my wife) just cannot watch a western. its to do with all sorts of almost proustian/instictive hatred of what they mean/represent

and the revival ones, for me, they ar ejust that. there's not been an essential western in the last 20 years (padraig us might disagree). unless you count the westerns not westerns type stuff

but maybe the wrongness of it would actually mean its particulalry relevant? doesnt it depend on your own angle of approach?
Yeah, for real. It could be. Just thinking of rugged masculinity vs. non-binary whatever goes, shooting injuns vs. respect for native traditions. Reminded about Padraig was saying re. history being a series of interpretations, so is cinema.
What was the last really good Western?

That's why Hollywood was in California apparently, the light. Made shooting easier.
the idea of california itself is quite interesting, its as far west as you can get. the ocean after the desert etc. makes sense it would be the location for dream making

Timothy Leary had a thing about the frontier of history moving steadily west from sumeria to persia to greece to rome to western europe to england to new york to california (and perhaps on to japan)

is it. Braudel is really really boring to read. clogs up his books with facts. you dont get that problem with Leary. he cuts to the chase. gives you the idea without the tedious supporting data.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me the last good Western. The last Tarantino references that history I guess (though a film about Hollywood, not a Western in itself)

like maybe a few others since (no country, true grit remake, like padraig said in other thread, maybe sisters brothers, probably not tho) but that is the only 'canon' one

yeah it has to Unforgiven, if you're talking canonically great

there have been probably a handful or two of solid Westerns since then but nothing like that

unless you want to stretch "Western" and start counting things like No Country For Old Men

The Quick and the Dead was released in the United States on February 10, 1995 to a dismal box office performance, and received mixed but generally favorable reviews from critics.

there's been things I like to some degree - Tombstone, Dead Man, The Proposition, etc

just nothing you'd put up there with The Searchers, the best Eastwood, Unforgiven, etc

the Latin scene in Tombstone is a personal fave

I can't really stand the American revisionist Westerns, but I love the Italian ones although they are a completely different thing.
