He's basically saying that a spelling mistake is worse than a global pandemic, mass death, incipient global fascism, joblessness, poverty, starvation, drought, wildfires, acid rain....

When you put it like that, it does seem quite insensitive.

Maybe Tea hadn't realised that. It's very grim still.
No it's fine, I was aware of this other "BLM" movement. Just hacked off at the hysteria over masks and the revolting attempt to draw some kind of parallel between that and the George Floyd case. [Edit: there, I've saved you the bother, John. ]

And, in general, the sorts of fatuous, entitled cunts who think that literally anything that prevents them from behaving exactly as they please at all times, or that inflicts even the slightest inconvenience, is "like something out of Nazi Germany". Never mind that, particularly in America, a lot of these are the same people with views that actually are not a million miles away from Nazi Germany.

I think we can agree that equating things with nazi germany is unhelpful yes.

Again, though, where does this self-entitlement and feeling that one is a robust indvidual with no debt to society come from?

Is it people's individual morality which is at fault?

Or is it the inevitable byproduct of 30 years of neoliberalism / "there is no such thing as society"? Which has been specifically engineered by the wealthy to ensure than any kind of collective solidarity is obliterated?

Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
I dunno John, I don't purport to have the answers. I'm sure you're right that neoliberalism has played some part in all this, but I don't think society was by any means perfect before neoliberalism came along and ruined everything, and in some ways things are still a lot better than they used to be, despite the current depressing trend for a general societal enshitification.

I just think there is little point in getting aggravated by a photo of some grafitti you have seen on the internet.

Some people are knobs. So what. We need to see the bigger picture and think about the forces at play.

It's a very basic point but I've only been repeating it for about 10 or so years so it hasn't sunk in yet.

OK, a good example of how a persistent meme can arise out of (almost) nothing. But that bit of graf is real, and it's a symbol for a way of thinking that's becoming extremely widespread and isn't at all a positive thing. That is what I'm getting at.

I'd have thought I wouldn't have to specify that no, I'm not actually getting mad over a single bit of stupid graffiti that a single wally has sprayed on a wall in London somewhere, in total isolation from all other social and political phenomena.

It's the way these things are presented to you as symbols, to make you react, to make you frame the problem in terms of 'stupid people' thereby drawing attention away from THE REPTILIANS!

well we we have seen this before with the paedo/paediatrician grafitti.

As Luka says the wider politics here are precisely about focussing attention on a few stupid individuals as a symptom of a huge problem which is actually not caused by them but by (ta da!) our rulers.

It’s weird that Luka, the bohemian poet who eschews politics and thinks conspiracy theories are a laff, has a better political analysis on this issue than you, no?

You do realise there is no-one who fits that bill? Even anti-maskers accept that they should wash their hands and not cough in someone else's face; the masks are a bone of contention among the scientists too - cf. SAGE minutes.
