The new Streets track

So despite being told by one firend that it made her want to cut her ears off, I'm finding my self actually quite liking the new Streets track 'When You wasn't Famous'. Silverdollar slags it in his new blog too.

So am I mad? I thoguht it was shit the first time I heard it, but now I'm sort of enjoying it. The 'remix' that I saw the video for through Fiddy's blog is fun as well, probably better that the original.

Has Skinner lost it? Discuss.

i think something has been lost. i mean, skinner now acknowleges that since he's had money he hasn't been so sure what to write about.

but i think it would be all to easy to jump on him for this. the new album has a slightly less honest tone to it. By that i guess i mean less earnest. But for me, it still has the essential elements which make the streets great.

The track in question gets my vote: ''you just can't keep fucking popstars... you've got a business to run''!

Personally I think that if a writer hasn't got anything to write about, then they shouldn't write. I interviewed Mike Skinner at the time of the last album's release and he said that the next one would involve his taking a look at the wider world with maybe not so much of "him" in it. I'm afraid I'm just not interested in the pain-of-being-famous line of music making - however wittily and elegantly it's done, I still get the feeling of "well, why should I pay twelve quid to hear about what a drag it is to be rich"?

because we live in a time over-obsessed with the false allure of "celebrity" - and this might be some kind of honest insight into it?

me neither.

skinner is witty, but his music still is shocking - and this is a particularly bad example.

its a sad case where people buy into the commodity of his personality yet seldom stop to listen to his actual music - past the clever lyrics.

dizzee to me strikes the personality/musical talent ballance far better (plus is heavy on a whole bunch of other levels).

I wasn't either when I first heard it, but it grew on me. Same with this one. The album as a whole doesn't stand up well I don't think.

2 things i don't like about this track:

1] it's deliberately irritating.

2] i think mike skinner is very over rated as a lyricist. the one thing he did really well was to be honest enough to talk about what's it's like living in a shit town, going to the pub most nights, and doing pills when you really should be trying to find yr mates in a club. i think it was his choice of subject matter, rather than any particular talent in dealing with that subject matter, which marked him out. but now his subject matter is boring, and verges on the 'Heat'-style 'expose'. so now he bores me.

IMO the Streets tread a fine line between being a 'serious' band, and some kind of cheeky chappy parklife novelty act at the best of times - and this tune is everything thats bad about them...

Why are they so highly rated anyway? Their productions not that great, and lyrics without flow = some git talking - I can hear that on the bus everyday for free. :D

okay so i had a listen on some of the tracks...

All Goes Out The Window just sounds like nite nite....
Can't Con An Honest John...what is that beat?? sounds like a bad eminem beat
Never Went To Church really cheezy but i dont mind this one, sounds like a streets song unlike some of these other ones...

so out of the 11 tracks that are on album i only enjoy a few of the tracks....and thats basically because i like the streets, if i was more impartial i would only like maybe 2...maybe

im pretty dissapointed but it seems that he's stuck creatively
