Going to be in cape town for a few days at the end of march, anyone got any further tips? Would la reference be an ok place to go on your own?

Gonna try and pick up a few cd's while I'm over there. Really want to pick up the culoe de song album in particular

i went to la reference alone a few times and had a really good time. felt a bit weird on the dancefloor bein the only white person in there but the bar staff were friendly and i didnt really feel unwelcome. most people who i've spoken to and are actually into s.a. house here reckon its the best place for it. for what its worth it seems to be more of a black thing. white peeps dont seem to be that into it for the most part. deluxe down the road on the corner of long and longmarket is worth a look too but thats a bit more about yer standard deep house shennaniganz, still good tho.

lots of people i've spoken to recommend durban and jo'burg over c.t. for quality s.a. house.

SHOW DEM!

my mate says this choon has crossed over and is taking over mainstream radio and mainstream clubs. he reckons "we love iiiiiiiiit that's why we make the circle bigger bigger bigger bigger" is gonna be the unofficial home team chant of the world cup.

Anyone know where to get a 320 of that Mzekezeke tune? Didn't pick up the CD as was only really feeling that one track.

Desperate to pick up 320s of so many of these tracks but they all seem pretty unattainable. Culoe de song style Deep House seems really popular over there at the moment. Went to a big party/BBQ type thing at one of the Cape Town townships and they were all playing this deeper sound rather than Kwaito. Nobody seemed to know anything about Mzo Bullet! These guys are worth checking out

This track is saying a lot as well

yeah it's just plain boring ole WRONG init?

still can't believe Akon (FUCKING AKON) is the "musical director" of an SA world cup. yes he's massively popular in SA. yes he owns his own diamond mine over there. but he's not an SA artist - he's Senegalese-American! why didn't they get Mdu or Mandoza or Zola or some other SA megastar?!

another use for the paint metaphor: liberal progressive surface, racist structure.

the following appeared on my blog so apologize if the "voice" sounds a bit... i don't know. weird.

people have brought up the fact that previous world cup songs have not always been representative of their host countries. while this is true, there are some differences:

this is a first for the African CONTINENT. a continent with an amazingly rich musical heritage (THE MOST amazing of all if you ask me, and a few musicologists).

Shakira is singing "waka waka" over an uncredited, unpaid-for rip-off of an old Cameroonian protest song.

Germany, Japan and France were colonialists, and have never been victims of colonialism, and they do not have a history of their music getting stolen and their artists being ripped off, because they were DOING the stealing and ripping off.

so given this context, this ABSOLUTELY should have been a chance for African voices to be heard, and African culture to take the spot light. but sadly, and expectedly, no.
