sounds like a blast. curious to hear what it's like, zhao. i sense we sometimes get incorrect reports here regarding safety on the streets, etc. have fun.

yes super psyched. staying with a bunch of young upstarts who run this fashion/music/culture agency thing out of both Soweto and another neighborhood name of which escapes me... (just told me already bought tickets to Apartheid museum) i think i will get a pretty real experience, and not just move in rich white circles which is i guess what happens to a lot of visitors.

and tour dates are here.

When we stayed there, we stayed in a lady's house, like a boarding house. We asked her what safety was like during the daytime in central Joburg, and she said she didn't know, she'd never been. We went down and hung out, it was fine. Lots of people coming up and telling us to watch ourselves and stuff.

Apartheid Museum is good.

Leave valuables in hotel/hostel, go to minibus station, get in the loudest minibus, don't ask where the minibus is going, pray the minibus doesn't get on the highway.

i do think of you brother! as a few years ago you provided some key inspiration which was partially responsible for set me off on this current musical course... you will receive more SA chooonage after i get back and sort things out (and where there is high speed internet - right now i'm sitting in McDonalds for the 1 hour slow wi-fi lol -- have never eaten so much fast food in my entire life lol) -- been to a couple of shops and picked up a few things already, but will spend at least a day next week and do some proper digging :)

just back from the 3 week trip, added more text and more photos and made it into almost a proper post:

it was awesome but i definitely have a new found respect for European general punctuality and professionalism... no horrible experiences but i was just not used to everything being so fluid and subject to change: line-up, time slot, everything can change at the last minute. kinda crazy and stressful for someone not yet used to that particular kind of flow.

I find this hilarious. :) Did you find the volume of people's speech substantially louder too?

compared to Germans definitely yes. but that part i'm very used to... grew up in a culture where outsiders always think we are shouting at each other while it's just a discussion on the best time of day to nap.

back to the unprofessionalism:

at the big party at the end of the photos, the dj before me had already put on the last track, and i was about to start, when 2 dudes come up on stage and one of them says "yo how you doing, i'm the booker, thanks for joining us. hey listen this guy is going to play now for 30 minutes, and you take your hour after that, cool?" and i was like "um.... alright" and when this dj who cut in front of me was almost finished the real booker comes up to me and says "why are you not playing?" so i had to cut my set short, but the next dj heard about what happened and started a bit later so my set was only 15 minutes shorter.

this kinda shit. #onlyinafrica lol

oh and that party was supposed to start at 1pm but started at 7 (lol roll eyes), which i guess was reason for tight scheduling (but dude that cut in front was not on the line up at all)

and at another party the booker was totally high and drunk and completely useless... when someone needed to ask him about something he was actually avoiding them heading the other direction lolol

but unprofessionalism has its upsides as well:

soon as i asked for classic Kwaito, manager at Jet Music brings out laptop and flash drive and begins transferring files for me. #onlyinafrica :)

Love the stories Zhao, hate to say it but one of the reasons I stopped doing big DJ gigs in London was precisely that - getting shucked out - I had my time booked - the guys kept on - I said to them politely "when am I playing, you've overrun", - they shrugged their shoulders, I went to the promoter, who was pissed, he reneged all duty. I went to them, scratched their 12 inch off the deck and said "WHAT?"

Wasn't worth the hassle. Never DJ'ed a big ting since.

lol yeah you just can't be a nice guy in those situations.

so anyway i'm hearing about a new strain of house coming out of Pretoria, direct descendants of the more underground sound of the likes of Mujava, which people are calling isigubhu, which just means drum in zulu. too bad didn't make it over there this time.

didn't really have very much luck with music shopping in Joburg... and only went to some big chain outlets, which are basically all there is. i hear the really underground stuff (which in SA kind of sometimes just means stuff that has not made it big yet) are sold in small street vendors but when i went to the street where these vendors supposedly are i did not see a single one after walking up and down. and then someone told me that you can only get that stuff directly from the artists, by writing them or at their gigs... but i did get some very nice "normal" SA deep house, in the percussive tribal vein that i like. if you are interested Sloan i can upload you some.

Pretoria stuff sounds interesting. Yeah man, if there's anything good you think I haven't heard, I'm quite up on it all still though, haven't got this year's releases though.
