rock is good when it doesn't sound like rock.

Hence Germany and Japan. and other things that do away with anglo-american hegemony. post-punk gets a massive free pass tho obvs but the best is anti-rock anyway.

good line I once read (Woebot, I think) about rock being better the further it gets from the blues, e.g. Can as the greatest rock band ever, Canned Heat etc as the worst

it's a solid general truism but not ironclad. Black Sabbath and all that follows is rock that sounds like rock.

even Flower Travellin' Band for example is hugely Sabbath derived.

the eagles are terrible

except

for "Hotel California"

(which actually has a tiny bit of Doors in it thematically - LA as decline and fall in the West)

oh and i also like that bit that was used as the theme song for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

no i think "Hotel California" is their moment of being half-interesting

i like the heavy-handed symbolism of the allegorical lyric - the have-cake-and-eat-it critique of decadence

Also like the fact that it's some kind of mangled attempt at reggae!

for more superstar rock cod-reggae, and a more humorous auto-critique of rock decadence, there's Eagle Joe Walsh's solo smash

(the reggae is in the main verse sections)

find it fascinating how the mass rock audience has this appetite for songs that are about the decline / decadence / sell-out etc etc of rock itself

Floyd's "Welcome To the Machine", "Have A Cigar", The Wall etc etc

it's like people buying the commodification of their own alienation or something

Dire Straits is the obvious one that immediately came to mind

suspect the taste is more for the decadence than the sell-out. ca. 70s-80s ideation of rock star ennui. escape into a fantasy of post-scarcity blow + groupies.

for the same concept turned inside out, see It's a Long Way to the Top If You Wanna Rock n' Roll.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Was at a dubstep reunion night last night

Music was great up to a certain point when it became a spinning back to the malfunctioning Dalek years

The crowd was so male and white though it was really horrendous confirmation of Barty and Lukas dismissal of it on demographic grounds

The we need some more girls in here bars came on at one point and it was so appropriate lol

Upstairs someone was playing jungle to a empty room while downstairs it was the pits of gnarly dubstep with a heaving throng of nerdy white blokes

Like Lukas personal vision of hell

Nah that's the other thing

Wiley was there and Scratchy too I think must have come down with Plastician

pass the sick bucket
liberator style acid tekno, raggatek, crusty jungle, psytrance.

And lol @ dubstep, practically every genre is overrun with middleclass white male blokes now. even experimental club stuff in the uk, id politics for humanities students.

It's ok corpse. you can relax. barty and luke's hypothesis has not been vindicated by history. you're back with the lads. we knew you would break through. Luke will be having a transfer to laverkusen.

You just need to put some team effort in and use your striker potential to its most deadly. no pussyfooting. go on son.
