"Really? I thought that they were arrogant enough to assume that they'd be showered with flowers, handing out cans of coke, leading the way for the rest of the Middle East. Hoping their plan would basically work, making the Bush regime look like the great liberators putting neo-conservatism into action. It was a giant social experiment that's gone hideously wrong. I think this is one for the cock-up version of history supporters."
I think that Swears is on the money here. Although they ought to have known full well what would happen - based on the analysis of pretty much everyone - they were arrogant enough to hear only what they wanted to hear and believe that they knew better than everyone else. They were trying to make the facts subject to their ideology and I think what has happened has come as a big unpleasant surprise to them. Even now certain right-wing commentators are still playing down what is happening in complete denial of the facts. I think it was Melanie Philips in the Mail (as recently endorsed by the BNP) who described people making a fuss about the situation and suggesting that things aren't going exactly according to plan as "a load of hooey".

"If anything sums up the postmodern concept of "entropy" it's the chaotic pile of shit that is post-occupation Iraq."
Why is the concept of entropy postmodern as a matter of interest? I thought it was simply a theory of thermodynamics or are you talking about something else?

Anyhow, certainly not in favour of the death penalty but I can't see how anyone would be surprised by the verdict.
