I thought it was thin. visually interesting in parts.

but there was a thin plot explanation: she ate the food because the captain punished her for getting her dress wet (ithink that was the reason) by sending her to bed without any dinner.

although I gotta say - never seen a character like the mother before? A saintly, put-upon, beautiful, suffering female (wife/mother) who dies to give pathos and motivation to the main character? standard.

I found the goreyness jarring too.

But overall I thought it was trying to be symbolist and not realist, so the lack of character wasn't in itself a problem. the problem was that it didn't hang together symbolically for me either,
