Love St. Peter's and their bitter isn't even their best beer, by a margin. They pull off the rare feat of doing just about every beer style imaginable, and doing them all really well. Their golden ale is about £1.50 in Waitrose at the moment, which is great as most of their ('trose's, I mean) beers are heading towards or have surpassed two squid a bottle. Look out for their wheat beer, their wheat-based grapefruit and ginger/lemon beers (if that's your bag), their phenomenal winter ale and honey porter, their IPA and...well just about anything really. I'm not a huge mild fan but scottdisco (who needs to make a comeback, big time) was very impressed by theirs when we paid a visit to the Jerusalem Tavern, I recall.

Nice. Really like wheat beers so I'll keep an eye out for it. Not sure we have waitrose in manchester, there's an M&S though.

I was pretty unimpressed by st peters red ale

i hate beer atm - living in wellington is meant to be good for beer likers but really it just means we have to put up with a hundred stupid gimmicks and jerks with beards thinking theyre cooler than u cos they put a chili in a beer even though it tastes like shit

lol

Anyone else getting pretty hacked off with Farage's endless photo ops that centre on him braying moronically while brandishing a pint of bitter like a totem of Nice Honest Ordinary English Blokeness? It's surely exactly what the real ale industry doesn't need right now, or ever. Of course it's hardly the most offensive thing about the man, but still. Gah.

Very true. I even had a dream last night where Farage sat me down with a pint of ale and tried to explain to me how I'd misunderstood him and he wasn't racist at all. Fuck sake.

(I'm pleased to say that in my dream I sat there wordlessly, finished my pint, and then walked out shaking my head. Even my subconscious hates him.)

that article is stupid. the only sensible thing it says is "In the end, the brewer is responsible for what style to call their beer. Sometimes you just have to take a sip and see for yourself!". there is no strict difference between a porter and a stout these days. historically stout just meant strong beer, regardless of colour, while ported was a dark beer....

also are they suggesting that IBU is a style of beer in that infographic?

I thought it was a quite useful potted history of the style, but never mind. It is of course true that the classification these days is pretty much up to the brewer.

Uh, I think you're misreading it - the shape at the top left is a key, the number in green being the IBU.

I've recently been trying to cut down on the amount that I drink for various fitness / financial reasons. One side effect of this is that I know get genuinely pissed off by mediocre beer when eg meeting up with friends or whatever - it's no longer a case of not fussing over the beer tonight cos I can go out for something that's actually decent tomorrow, now it's like, I'm picking this for one of my nights on the sauce this week and with the whole world of amazing booze out there I'm stuck in a fucking Greene King pub drinking Abbot bloody Ale.

On a somewhat tangential note, can Swedish cider please just fuck off? Overpriced, syrup-sweet shite. It's basically alcopops for hipsters.

Also, 'cider' (from anywhere) that's brewed with anything other than than apples. If it's brewed from pears then it's perry, not 'cider'. If it's brewed with fucking strawberries and blackcurrants then it's really just alcoholic Vimto for kidults who don't like the taste of alcohol.

I must correct myself. There is a version of Old Rosie from Westons that's got rhubab in it and isn't particularly sweet at all and is delicious. Only ever seen it in my local. I've asked the management about it and they say everyone and his dog has been asking when they can get it back it in. I'm going to drink myself comatose on it when they eventually do.

Done four pints of it Watching West Ham lose. Good gear if you have no wish to get drunk. Hope my local keeps it on for a while
