The cannabis debate

The trouble with skonk is that it's too heavy on the THC without enough of the other constituents to balance things out. Nice once in a while though, very moreish.

It's absolutely untrue. See Ben Goldacre.

Yeah, I've read his piece since that post - the true increase has been a factor of two, or at the very most 2.5: so the '25 x stronger' claim is an exaggeration of an order of magnitude!

Though as noel says, people breeding skunk strains concentrate on THC content and neglect the other stuff, like CBD that actually *ameliorates* schizophrenic symptoms.

Government ministers probably get access to the really good stuff. Look at the house of lords, proper lean up.

Ibogaine lore is very interesting but I don't know if I believe the reports.

What aspect of them? The fact that there are reports of it being highly effective in disrupting opiate dependence?*

*just a wild stab in the dark there... ;)

Do expand on what you mean by lore, nomad, and what reports you don't believe...

The "Tribe" episode where Bruce Parry takes iboga was interesting.

I also saw a talk 8 or 9 years ago by someone (wish I could remember who) who was one of the few people at that time who had gone to Gabon and been initiated into the Bwiti religion. What I will never forget is the far-away glazed look in his eyes. He absolutely refused to talk about the content of his experience, much to the disappointment of the assembled crowd, many of whom had had plenty of psychedelic experience and were unwilling to believe that this was anything more special.

All he did was show a bunch of slides at the end of the talk of giant blue eyes from different cultures around the world (eye of Horus, etc), without any real explanation. Was quite unnerving.

i saw a guy do a talk about ayahuasca - and this crazy guy once - http://headoverheels.org.uk/usko/pablo.html
it was ok.
alot of people seem to be experimenting with ayahuasca and taking drugs quite seriously again at the mo which is interesting.

Personally I would never advise anyone to smoke cannabis on a regular basis. Whilst it may appear to be one of the 'safer' drugs, I would argue that it is not.

Whilst it is true that the facts are slightly distorted with regards to cannabis causing psychosis, such as schizophrenia, in that this tends to be the case only if the user already had a predisposition towards psychotic symptoms, cannabis can also lead to anxiety and depression - and as these can be both independent of biological factors, and thus predispositions, it could happen to anyone who smokes cannabis on a regular basis.

I highly, highly doubt that the government would ever legalise the production of cannabis or make the production of alcohol illegal.

Care to offer any evidence in support of those claims? I'd say the medical debate is far from certain. Although I'll check myself...

Unlike say, MODERN LIFE! (or lack of weed....)

What about all the good cannabis does? It might disagree with some but that's no reason to deny others the potential benefits. The plant is a gift, millions agree.

You knew that was coming didn't you?

Oh come on everyone, do we really need a 'pro-weed'/'anti-weed' dichotomy?

Surely it's abundantly clear to any sensible person that yes, it's enjoyable* and perhaps even medicinal, but that toking all the time can fuck you up?

*I mean, it's sensible to see that some people enjoy it - plenty of people don't enjoy it, for one reason or another, or simply have no interest in trying it.

No you're right T, I just couldn't let that one go. It's a tedious debate, but that's what I imagine every time I see the thread title anyway.
