A Komonasmuk & White Boi - The Apocalypse

B Cursor Miner - Grimewatch

as featured twice on Mary Anne Hobb's Experimental show, BBC Radio 1, and 3 times at the recent Bloc Festival...

A >> Komonasmuk & White Boi - The Apocalypse
Side A sees 2 new sonic warriors on board the clan, appearing out of nowhere to deliver possibly of the heaviest halfstep tracks for this year... Test copies surfaced in selected independent stores - all got snapped up within hours, and it's not hard to see why : Apocalypse is immense work of snarling brutal bass and beats that's only "dubstep" in the loosest sense of the word - it retains the genre's heaviness and halfstep riddims, but thrusts everything far into a bleak, post-apocalyptic future wasteland, where you don't so much meditate on bassweight as you do on burning skies, crushed cities and total annhilation of all civilisation.

Gigantic kickdrums work in mechanical harmony with growling earth-shaking subs; each beat knocks you back squarely in the chest, giving barely enough time to recover before the next one hits... redline frequencies hiss and fizzle in a manner that would do Scorn and Vex'd proud.

The deviants for this work of destruction are Bristol's White Boi & Komonasmuk. The latter culprit is veteran producer Kieran Lomax, better known for his heavy drum and bass rollouts as Ice Minus, on seminal labels like Hard Leaders, Tech Itch, Audio Couture, Moving Shadow and Ice Minus Recordings. Alongside production partner and Sub FM's White Boi, they form part of the HENCH crew alongside Headhunter (Tempa / Acension), Tech Itch, Wedge and Jakes... This crew is responsible for pushing a militant, powerful techy sound in dubstep that's mirrored in producers like Vex'd, Distance, Blackmass Plastics, Crooked Man, Scan One, Mathhead, Stark Sound, Sully Shanks, Reso, Threnody and more... The early waves of a darker electronic undercurrent within the genre.... call it dubstep, call it industrial half-step etc, whatever it is, it's fierce, fresh and will wreck total havoc on large soundsytems from the first drop.

B >> Grimewatch - Cursor Miner
Lo Recordings mainstay and one of Combat's arch-deviants Cursor Miner steps forth to deliver this chunky, slick electro-tinged breakstep mutant. Grimewatch possesses one of the bounciest basslines we've ever heard or felt for that matter.... a huge elastic projectile ball of bass that pulls back, then flies out at you catapult-like, exploding in dub-like delays out in the distance behind.

This track has raised it's cheeky head at Cursor's various gigs for the past 3 years, mashed into his maniac peak-time live sets, as well as finding it's way into the DJ sets of mavericks like Si Begg and Combat crew. Half electro, half dubby break-step and all attitude, it's just another variant of Cursor's spazz-funk (his own words) - a very broad term to describe his typically skewed, off-kilter yet chunky, warm and insanely effective dancefloor releases. Expect the usual rolling, militant energy and glitchy hyper-edits of a Cursor production

Look out for C13 and future releases causing much havoc at these forthcoming gigs:

Human Error, London 24 May
Yardcore, London 1 June
NFA, London 2 June
NFA, London 9 June
Platform 1, London 14 June

Combat is a fine label and they wouldn't know what we are talking about so there's no need to start projecting fellas...

I'm sure you're right, but let's review the situation:

It's not just me projecting, is it?

Or, to put it another way, it isn't just me projecting that they need to worry about...

I mean, this is strictly raised eyebrows rather than a ticking off. :)

As it's dubstep, I reckon a cursory once-over is the best to expect from me, Martin. ;)

Well the next release is from the inventor of Dubstep, Scorn :) I've followed the label from early MP3 releases and they are a good crew Jon and you can't hold them responsible for some of the stupid names artists call themselves ;) . I'm sure they'll be back here to explain, if they need to at all...

Oh is it them doing the Scorn dubstep stuff? Hmm!

Fair do's to 'em but they need to have a meeting about their branding... ;)

are you guys deliberatly trying to court the national front?

What makes you say that Matt? And why the NF? They haven't had a standing in right wing politics for over a decade, in fact splinter groups like the N9s, BPP, BPF and EFP have more of a standing than the NF these days but it's the BNP we all need to watch.

I think Mick would argue otherwise but that may be for another thread mate ;) ...I never even thought of it until you guys mentioned it, I thought it was pretty clear what they where up to be honest.

I do feel a bit sorry for combat though, that's a pretty big list of unfortunate coincidences john eden just reeled off..

Not really, most people wouldn't have a clue what he was talking about and if they read a little more about the label, the list wouldn't have been made in the first place IMHO. Bit like saying Sheff Utd are Nazis cos they play in red/white/black...

PS Listen to Greetings From Birmingham ;)

no i totally disagree, martin
the title & graphics caught my attention straight away for no other reason,
i don't really give a shit about their dubstep cred, flirting with facism/nazism as a way of publicising pop music is cheap and nasty, whether it's just for a larf/attention-seeking it still stinks... (reminds me about hellsd who thought he had a whole justification about how he was entitled to 'subvert' holocaust & genocide imagery & what a feckless slime he turned out to be, yeah  )

i assume they're not serious but that's clearly a conscious adoption of the brand. they must be fucking pricks if they think that's cool or hard or whatever, at best they are naive, & so are you i think martin d

i'd like to challenge 'stormfield' or one of the 'clan' come & explain....

Jesus talk about judging a book by it's cover or in this case song titles and kung fu throwing stars.

It's not my label so I can find no reason to continue to defend Combat except to say you are wrong on so many levels and I'm surprised so many well read people are giving it the they are NF/WN/Nazi without knowing anything about the label or the artists.

I'm not naive at all, far from it.

What's your problem with Stormfield? Clan is a very common word among the youth of today and doesn't have the meaning that most people here seem to think. Maybe your view of things is just as blinkered but I can't understand why people here are getting so hot under the collar about this.

As far as I know White Boi and Komonazmuck have no official ties to Combat.

I think they're linked to Rag and Bone possibly, not sure though. Other person that springs to mind is Blackmass Plastics, and he's a lovely chap so...

Cursor Miner has done some wicked tunes in the past, so it'll be interesting to hear his take on dubstep.
I think the label's name could cause problems in five releases time, though.
